【Miklos】You live in an area where you’re relatively safe from social harm?

【Lauren】Yeah, I would definitely say relatively safe. In the current area that I live in, which is Regina, Saskatchewan, think of the very center of the country of Canada, and it’s basically right in the middle there, very close to it.

【Lauren】There are some issues socially, mostly for trans people. If you are lesbian, gay, bisexual, ace, which is what I am, then it’ll be a lot easier. It’s mostly trans folks that are really getting the short end of the stick.

【Miklos】Mm hm.

【Lauren】But in general, yeah, for me, where I’m currently living socially, I am comfortable and I feel safe and legally protected, which is important.

【Miklos】Legally protected, yeah.

【Lauren】Yeah.

【Miklos】And also like legal protection and practical everyday safety protection. Those are kind of, there’s a gap, right? Like you can,

【Lauren】Yeah.

【Miklos】It’s like if the light turns, you know, if the crosswalk turns green and you walk, you still get hit by a car. Like, I mean, you still have to look out for yourself. Like, how does that, um, how does that affect your identity as a teacher?

【Lauren】Umm, a majority of the time, for example, because I am focused on only teaching adults, I only mention the topic if they bring it up. I’m relatively open about who I am, but I don’t usually bring it up as a topic of conversation because I’m not sure if they are even comfortable discussing this type of topic.

【Miklos】Ohh.

【Lauren】A lot of students might not be just because they might not understand the terms used.

【Miklos】Yeah.

【Lauren】They might not have any personal experience that they knew of with queer folks. So, it’s something that I don’t really mention unless I’m specifically asked about it. Often I gesture a lot, especially with my left hand because my right hand has a pencil for taking notes.

【Miklos】Alright.

【Lauren】And they will notice my shiny ring. And they will ask usually first after my husband. And then I basically make a determination of in this case with this student, do I say spouse or do I say wife?

【Lauren】And it really depends on the level of comfort that I have with this person who is my student. If they would perhaps be interested in that topic, I have it on my profile that I am LGBT and I am comfortable talking about it. But sometimes in the moment we’re talking about something else and I don’t want to bring it up and change it to something about me. I want to keep it on a conversation that they would like to talk about. So then I just say spouse.

Summary(要約)

Miklos asks Lauren if she feels safe where she lives in Regina, Canada. Lauren says she generally feels comfortable, safe, and legally protected. However, she says transgender people still face more social problems than other LGBTQ people.

Miklos points out that being legally protected and feeling safe in everyday life are not always the same thing. He then asks how Lauren’s identity affects her work as a teacher. Lauren explains that because she teaches adults, she usually only talks about being LGBTQ if a student brings it up first.

Lauren says she is open about who she is, but some students may not understand LGBTQ terms or have much experience with LGBTQ people. Because of that, she thinks carefully about how comfortable each student might be with the topic. She usually waits until they ask her a question about her personal life.

Sometimes students notice Lauren’s wedding ring and ask about her husband. At that moment, she decides whether to say “my wife” or the more general word “my spouse,” depending on the student and the conversation. She says she wants to keep the focus on what the student wants to talk about, rather than turning the conversation into something about herself.

Phrases of the day(今日のフレーズ)

1) Relatively(比較的)

  • My neighborhood is relatively safe.
  • This restaurant is relatively cheap.
  • I grew up in a relatively small town.

2) Get the short end of the stick(損な役回りになる)

“get the short end of the stick”は、「損な役回りになる」「不公平な扱いを受ける」を意味するイディオムです。 例えば、「私は職場でいつも損な役回りになる」は“I always get the short end of the stick at work.”

  • I feel like I got the short end of the stick.
  • The new employees got the short end of the stick.

3) Look out for oneself(自分の身を守る)

例えば、「自分の身は自分で守らないといけないよ」は“You have to look out for yourself.”

  • I’ve learned to look out for myself.
  • At work, everyone is looking out for themselves.
  • I know you want to help everyone, but you need to look out for yourself too.

4) Bring something up(話題を持ち出す)

例えば、「ちょっと話したいことがあるんだ」は“I need to bring something up with you.”

  • Can I bring something up?
  • She brought up an interesting point.
  • Thanks for bringing that up.

5) Make a determination(判断を下す)

例えば、「判断を下す前に、もう少し情報が必要です」は“We need more information before we can make a determination.”

  • I can’t make a determination yet.
  • The doctor will make a determination after seeing the test results.
  • Let’s wait until tomorrow before we make a determination.
