英語で「おめでとう」を「congratulation」と表現することは多くの方がご存知かと思います。しかし「congratulation」は少々かしこまったニュアンスがあるので、今日はもっとカジュアルな響きで「おめでとう！」と言いたい場合に使える表現を紹介しようと思います。
1) Congrats
→「おめでとう」
“Congratulations”の省略形で、意味と使い方は全く同じですが“Congrats”の方が口語的な言い方になります。会話やメール、SNSなど様々な状況で使われていますが、友達や同僚など親しい関係の人に対して使われるフレンドリーな響きがあります。
- 「〜おめでとう」→「Congrats on _____」
・You passed the test? Congrats!（試験に合格したの？おめでとう！）
・Congrats on getting married! Wishing you two a lifetime of happiness!（結婚おめでとう！末永くお幸せに！）
・Congrats on your promotion! I’m really happy for you!（昇進おめでとう！私も嬉しいよ！）
・Congrats on getting married! Wishing you two a lifetime of happiness!（結婚おめでとう！末永くお幸せに！）
・Congrats on your promotion! I’m really happy for you!（昇進おめでとう！私も嬉しいよ！）
2) Kudos
→「よくやったね」
“Kudos”は「栄光」や「名声」を意味するギリシャ語が語源となっており、何か大きな功績を収めた人に対し賞賛の意を示す意味として使われています。日常会話では「Kudos to you!」が定番のフレーズとなっており「よくやったね！」や「すごいね！」と訳すことができますが、どちらかというとメールやSNSで使用されることが多いです。
- 「〜さん、よくやりました！」→「Kudos to ______」
- 人の具体的な行為を称賛する場合は「Kudos for _____」
・Kudos to you! You should be proud of yourself!（よくやったね！本当に素晴らしいことだよ！）
・Kudos to everybody who helped out with this event. This would not be possible without your support.（イベントに協力してくださった皆さんのお陰です。皆さんのサポートがなければ達成できませんでした。）
・Kudos to all the teachers and educators in the world!（世界中の講師や教育者を心から称賛します！）

I have a question.
I understand congratulations means “OMEDETO” only.
However, when I introduced my American friend to my favorite painter, he said, “Oh! These’re good works! Congratulations!”. I didn’t know what he congratulated me on. What kind of nuance does Congratulations have? Thank you:)
I’m not exactly sure what your friend is implying but I’m assuming he’s congratulating you on your good work 😃
