今回は「気付く」を意味する「Recognize」「Realize」「Notice」について。３つとも似たニュアンスを持つ単語ですが、場面によってそれぞれ使い方と意味が異なります。状況に応じて適切な表現を使えるようになりましょう！
Notice
Noticeは、視覚、聴覚、嗅覚、味覚、触覚の五感の働きによって得られる気付きを表す際に使われます。例えば、髪の毛をカットしたのに、全く気づいてくれていない鈍感な恋人に対し、「I got a haircut yesterday. I bet you didn’t even notice.（昨日、髪の毛を切ったけど気づいてないでしょう？）」と突っ込んだり、ピーマン嫌いな娘をもつ母親が、他のママ友と対策案を相談している場面で、「Do you think she’ll notice if we minced the bell peppers?（ピーマンをみじん切りしたら、あの子気づくと思う？）」と言ったりすることができます。
- Did you notice that John’s trying to grow his hair out?
（ジョンが髪の毛を伸ばしていることに気づいた？） - There was an earthquake this morning? I didn’t notice it at all.
（今朝、地震があったの？全然気づかなかった。） - Don’t worry about that little stain. No one’s going to notice.
（ちっちゃな染みは気にしなくていいよ。誰も気づかないから。）
Realize
Realizeは、それまで気づいていなかった自分の立ち位置や物事の状況などが、何かの拍子に明確なる気付きを表します。ポイントは、状況を把握したうえで頭で理解する（＝気づく）ことです。例えば、帰りの電車の中でレストランに携帯を忘れたことに気づいた場合は「I just realized I left my cellphone at the restaurant.」と言います。
その他、「Sometimes you don’t realize what you have until it’s gone.（失うまで、その大切さに気づかないこともある）」のように、物事の価値に気づく意味としてRealizeを使うこともできます。
- Oh no. I just realized I booked a flight for the wrong date.
（やばい。間違った日にちに飛行機を予約したことに今気づいた。） - I didn’t realize it’s already past midnight. Where did the time go?
（もう深夜過ぎだって気づいていませんでした。あっという間に時間が経ちましたね。） - When I studied abroad, I realized the importance of speaking up and saying what’s on my mind.
（海外留学をして、思ったことはハッキリ言うことの重要さに気づかされました。）
Recognize
Recognizeは、日本語の「見覚えがある」や「聞き覚えがある」に近い意味合いがあり、以前に接触したことのある人や物事に、再び触れたことによって気づくことを意味します。例えば、20年ぶりに高校時代の友達と再会したとしましょう。容姿がすっかり変わっていて気づかなかったと言いたいなら、「Is that you Matt? Oh my goodness. I didn’t recognize you!（もしかして、マット？わぁ、全然気づかなかったよ！）」となります。
また、視覚や聴覚による気付きだけでなく、「I recognize this smell. What is it?（この匂い覚えがある。なんだっけ？）」や「I recognize this flavor. Is it yuzu?（この風味は覚えがあるな。もしかして柚子？）」のように、嗅覚や味覚による気付きにも使うことができます。
- I recognized him right away. He got a little chubby but he still had that same mustache he had in college.
（彼にすぐ気づいたよ。ちょっと太ったけど、大学時代のヒゲはそのままだったからさ。） - Do you recognize this song? I bet it brings back memories.
（この曲に聞き覚えある？懐かしいでしょう。） - I recognize this place. I’ve been there before for sure. Is it Kenrokuen Garden?
（その場所、なんか見覚えがあるな。絶対に行ったことある。もしかして兼六園？）

I found myself reading this column when I looked up about ‘ 気づく’ . I should have noticed faster and I realized I hardly ever use the verb ‘ Recognize ‘ in conversation. I thought that ‘ Recognize ‘ means ‘ 認識する, 認める, so it was difficult for me to use in conversation. More often than not, I say ‘ I saw that~~~~’ or ‘ I heard that ~~~~’ , so I will try to use like your explanations next time!!
At any rate, these three verbs are confusing!!
However, I’m happy to know the new one 🙂

こんにちは。英語ではシンプルに「might know（知っているかもしれない）」というのが最も自然な言い方だと思います → My parents might know that I’m dating someone.

そのような状況では”Make someone realize _____ / Made me realize _____”がいいかと思います。

Great question! “Notice” means to become aware of someone/something by “seeing” “hearing” or “feeling” them. Findは「知らないうちに〜をしている」や「思わず〜をしてしまう」など、自分自身が何かを無意識にやっていることに気づくことを表します。
