口コミ
 
口頭でのコミュニケーション、いわゆる日本語で言う「口コミ」を指します。この表現を使うときは基本「by」か「through」を「Word of mouth」の前に持ってきます。
  • Our business has grown through word of mouth.「我々は口コミで広がっています」
  • I found out about it by word of mouth. 「口コミで知りました」
  • This product became popular though word of mouth. 「この商品は口コミで人気がでました」

AとBを区別・見分けることが出来る・出来ないときに使う表現です。

  • I can’t tell the difference between them.「違いが分かりません」
  • I can tell the difference between tap water and mineral water. 「水道水とミネラルウォーターの違いは分かります」

Wait until the last minute
ギリギリまで待つ
 
直訳すると「最後の一分まで待つ」物事に取り組むのにギリギリまで待つことを「Wait until the last minute」と表現します。
その他、「Last minute」は「直前、土壇場」の意味もします。
  • Don’t wait until the last minute! Do it now. 「ぎりぎりまで待たないで、今やりなさい！」
  • If you wait until the last minute, all the tickets will sell out. 「ギリギリまで待ったら、チケット売れきれちゃうよ」
  • Last minute cancellation.「ドタキャン」
  • Last minute change. 「土壇場の変更」

  • In the red – 赤字
    • I lost my money in Las Vegas. I’m in the red.「ラスベガスで負けちゃった。赤字ですよ」
  • In black and white – 物事がはっきりしていること、白黒ではっきりと書かれている
    • There it is in black and white! I won a free trip to Hawaii! 「はっきり書いてあるでしょ！ハワイ旅行当たった！」
  • A white lie – 罪のないうそ、人を傷つけないうそ

For the time being

当分の間は

「当分の間」「差し当たり」「とりあえず」を意味します。この表現は文章の頭または最後に使われることが一般的です。
  • I’ll be living in Los Angeles for the time being. 「当分はロサンゼルスに住みます」
  • For the time being, I’ll ride my bicycle to work. 「当分の間は自転車で会社に通います」
  • I’m planning on starting my own business soon but for the time being I’m going to save up some money. 「近いうちに自分のビジネスを立ち上げる予定ですが、当分はお金を貯金します」

時々、断続的に
 
「On and off」と「Off and on」両方使います。雨が降ったり止んだりするときにも使えるフレーズです。
  • It’s been raining on and off all day today.　「今日は一日中、雨が降ったり止んだりだね」
  • They have been dating each other off and on for 6 months.「あの二人はこの6ヶ月間付き合ったり、別れたりしている」
  • I have been studying English on and off for 3 years. 「私は3年間英語を断続的に勉強しています」
