【Emily】So what do you think about AI and how it’s affecting like the job market?

【Andy】Mm, that one is interesting because I do know, I do have a few friends that are directly affected by it. There are companies have let a lot of people go, and ultimately they went to, like AI. Umm, but I don’t think like…I think AI right now is still very limited in what it can do, and I think I think the company’s letting these people go like they’re too…it was too soon.

【Andy】Umm, they’re just kind of like, you know, we can…we can use this AI, but they don’t really know how to use the AI. So I think there’s still like potential for people to like learn how to use it. And maybe like that’s a job in itself, you know?

【Emily】Yeah.

【Andy】Umm, but we’re definitely in like the early stages of that for sure.

【Emily】Yeah, I agree. I don’t…I think it’s too early to say that AI is like taking over. I mean I could see how it’s going to be affecting the way that we work in general, so I think it’s like really important to learn how to use AI and learn how to use it like intentionally and well.

【Andy】Yeah, yeah.

【Emily】But I feel like I don’t know. I do see like more newer jobs being created because of AI, but also I feel like, in terms of, because I’m a dancer. And also, I do like music, and I see a lot of my friends struggling because of AI and people thinking that AI can replace the creativity that these people…

【Andy】Right.

【Emily】Like train so hard to like have, but it’s like, it doesn’t hit. Do you know what I mean?

【Andy】No, it’s not the same.

【Emily】Like, it’s missing. Like, I know, like when I see something, like, for example, there’s so much AI music now.

【Andy】Yeah.

【Emily】And I listen to it.

【Andy】You can tell.

【Emily】And it feels so weird, like, listening to it.

【Andy】It’s very kind of just empty.

【Emily】Yeah.

【Andy】There’s not that human touch.

【Emily】Like, no offense to people who like AI music. If you like it, that’s totally fine.

【Andy】No, no, I’ll offend. Please.

【Emily】Somebody who does music, you know, it’s like… I listen to it because it represents, like, that person’s, like, soul.

【Andy】Right.

【Emily】So it’s just kind of sad to see that…creative should be being paid way more and more and more like it’s not even like a job anymore. It’s like a hobby because you can’t pay the bills with it.

【Andy】For sure.

【Emily】 Because AI is like taking over that industry for sure.

As a dancer and someone interested in music, Emily is especially worried about creative jobs. She has friends who are struggling because some people believe AI can replace human creativity. She and Andy agree that AI-created music can sometimes feel empty because it is missing the “human touch.”

For Emily, music is special because it expresses the artist’s feelings and soul. She feels sad that many creative people already have trouble making enough money to pay the bills, and AI may make that even harder. Phrases of the day（今日のフレーズ）

1) Let someone go（人を解雇する）

“let someone go”は、本来「人を行かせる」「自由にする・解放する」という意味ですが、仕事の文脈では「（人を）解雇する」「辞めてもらう」という意味の表現です。“fire someone（クビにする）”よりも柔らかく、会社の経営状況や人員削減、仕事上の問題などを理由に雇用を終了するときによく使われます。特に会社側が直接的に「クビにした」と言うのを避けたいときに使われる、やや婉曲的な表現で、例えば「会社は何人かの従業員を解雇しなければなりませんでした」は“The company had to let some employees go.”といいます。ちなみに、“be let go”の形で「解雇される」という意味でもよく使われます。

2) Take over（引き継ぐ、支配する）

“take over”は、「引き継ぐ」「代わりに担当する」「支配する・乗っ取る」という意味の句動詞です。基本的なイメージは、それまで誰かが担当・管理していたものを、自分が代わってコントロールすることです。例えば、仕事を途中から引き継いだり、会社の経営を引き継いだりするときに使うほか、“AI is taking over. ”のように言うと「AIが人間の仕事や役割をどんどん奪っている・AIに支配されつつある」というニュアンスになります。

3) Human touch（人間らしさ）

“human touch”は、直訳すると「人間の触れ合い」ですが、日常会話では「人間らしさ」「人ならではの温かみ」「人と人とのつながり」という意味でよく使われます。特にAIや自動化されたサービスなどと人間を比べる場面で使われ、機械では再現しにくい思いやり、共感、温かさ、個人的なコミュニケーションなどを表します。“the human touch”や“a human touch”の形で使われることが多く、例えば“lose the human touch”は「人間らしさを失う」、“add a human touch”は「人間らしい温かみを加える」という意味になります。

4) No offense, but ~（悪く言うつもりはないけど）

“no offense, but ~”は、「悪く言うつもりはないけど」「気を悪くしないでね」「失礼な意味じゃないけど」という意味のカジュアルな表現で、相手が不快に感じるかもしれない意見や率直なことを言う前に、「あなたを傷つけるつもりはないですよ」とワンクッションを置くために使います。例えば、「悪く言うつもりはないけど、それはあまりいいアイデアだとは思わないな」は“No offense, but I don’t think that’s a good idea.”といいます。ちなみに、相手から少し失礼なことを言われたときに“No offense taken.”と返すと「気にしてないよ」「気を悪くしてないよ」という意味になります。

5) Pay the bills（生活費を稼ぐ）

“pay the bills”は、直訳すると「請求書を支払う」ですが、日常会話では「生活費を稼ぐ」「生活していくためのお金を稼ぐ」という意味でもよく使われます。ここでの“bills”は家賃、光熱費、食費など生活に必要なお金全般をイメージしており、特に仕事について話すときに 「好きな仕事ではないけれど、生活のためにやっている」というニュアンスで使われることがあります。例えば、「生活費を稼ぐために仕事が必要です」は“I need a job to pay the bills.”といいます。ちなみに、文字通り「請求書を払う」という意味でも使えます。
