【Lauren】So Miklos, you mentioned that in your personal experience, both teaching in Japan and living in elementary school in the US…

【Miklos】Yeah.

【Lauren】…that there were different priorities to the education, both like the teacher’s priorities and how like the school system in general of how it goes throughout a day, prioritizes different things.

【Miklos】Yeah.

【Lauren】And I was curious what your specific things would be that stand out to you the most.

【Miklos】 Um, okay. Uh, I made a, I made a little short list here of things so that I would stay clear and focused cause, uh, cause, cause every single little thing that every little thing could go off on a crazy tangent. So, um, so to stay focused, so I made a list.

【Miklos】So, um, I started with the Japanese elementary schools because that’s where I am right now. And, uh, so like when it comes to priorities and education and, and this is also specifically for elementary school, cause that’s, um, where my head’s at right now and what I observe every day.

【Miklos】The things that I see that are emphasized and prioritized are, like I mentioned before, cooperation, um, responsibility, routine and consistency.

【Lauren】Mm-hm.

【Miklos】Routine is, I mean, that goes for a lot of education around the world with kids. But yeah, like there’s just a, it’s crazy. All the kids almost have a muscle memory by the time they’re in second grade of just what to do and where to be and when and how to do things. Respect for others, regardless of anything.

【Lauren】Mm-hm.

【Miklos】Perseverance, which I think I mentioned, you know, the “gaman spirit”, just like, you know, yes, this is hard, and yes, it’s uncomfortable, but persevere. It’s a huge thing. Group harmony. I know it’s a stereotype, I guess, but it’s true. Group harmony is emphasized, you know, subtly throughout education and elementary school.

【Miklos】And then independence in, like, practical life skills, like preparing food and just doing stuff, just you know, um, teaching you know, like, the that metaphor of teaching a man to fish, uh rather than just doing it for them. Like just you know they’re teaching kids how to fish.

Summary(要約)

Miklos explains that he made a short list of the biggest priorities he sees in Japanese elementary schools. He says he wanted to stay focused because there are so many differences he could talk about. His observations come from both his experience as a teacher and as a parent.

One of the biggest priorities, he says, is cooperation and responsibility. Students also learn the importance of routines and doing the same things every day. By second grade, many children know exactly what to do without needing much help from adults.

He also says that Japanese schools teach respect for others and perseverance. Children are encouraged to keep trying even when something is difficult or uncomfortable. He believes the idea of gaman, or patiently enduring challenges, is an important part of school life.

Finally, Miklos says Japanese schools place a strong focus on group harmony and independence. Children learn practical life skills, such as preparing food and taking care of everyday tasks. Instead of doing everything for children, schools teach them how to do things on their own.

Phrases of the day(今日のフレーズ)

1) Stand out(目立つ)

  • She always stands out in a crowd.
  • His bright yellow jacket really stood out.
  • What stood out (the) most about your trip?

2) Go off on a tangent(脱線する)

“go off on a tangent”は、「脱線する」を意味するイディオムです。 例えば、「ごめん、話が脱線しちゃった」は“Sorry I went off on a tangent.”

  • I tend to go off on a tangent when I get excited.
  • Sorry I went off on a tangent. What were we talking about?
  • We started talking about work, then went off on a tangent about the World Cup.

3) When it comes to(~に関して言えば)

“when it comes to ~”は、「~のことになると」「~に関して言えば」を意味し、ある特定の話題に焦点を当てて、自分の意見や得意・不得意、特徴などを述べるときによく使います。例えば、「彼はワインに関してこだわりがあります」は“When it comes to wine, he’s picky.”

  • When it comes to traveling, I love backpacking.
  • When it comes to technology, Tom is your guy.
  • When it comes to learning English, consistency is the key.

4) One’s head is at(その人が今何を考えているか)

例えば、「私には、自分が今どうしたいのか整理する時間が必要です」は“I need some time to figure out where my head is at.”

  • I’m not sure where his head is at these days.
  • Sorry, what did you say? My head was somewhere else.
  • That’s just where my head is at right now.

5) Perseverence(粘り強く頑張ること)

  • Learning English takes perseverance.
  • Even when things get tough, you have to persevere.
