「本質・真髄」は英語で？

物事の中心や最も肝心な点、欠くことのできない性質を日本語では本質や真髄と表現しますが、英語ではどう表現するのでしょうか？

Essence
→ 「本質 / 真髄 / 核心 / 重要な部分」

Essenceは、物事の本来の性質や最も肝心な点、または根本的な要素など「本質」や「真髄」の意味として使われる単語です。「〜の本質」は「Essence of_____」、「本質的には」は「In essence, _____」と表現します。

I believe the essence of communication is being a good listener.
（コミュニケーションの本質は、良い聞き手であることだと思います。）
What do you think is the essence of happiness?
（幸せの本質は何だと思いますか？）
What do you think is the essence of being a good leader?
（良いリーダーになる本質はなんだと思いますか？）

〜会話例〜
A: What do you think is the essence of effective teaching?
（効果的に教えることの本質とはなんですか？）
B: I think the essence of teaching is to help students figure out problems on their own.
（生徒たちが自分たちで問題が解けることを手助けすることだと思います。）

が正しいですか？
それとも口語になると
What do you think is the essence of effective teaching
が正しいのでしょうか？
