【Cindy】So what is (are) your most embarrassing moments? Or one of them.

【Alisa】Impossible to choose one so I’ll start with one that came to my mind a few minutes ago. Um so when I was on an eight-hour flight to go to Europe, I really wanted to be fresh and rested because I … sleep is really important to me so for my long flight I really wanted to be able to sleep. So my dad lent me some of his uh sleeping pills…

【Cindy】Mm hm.

【Alisa】To help me adjust for the first couple weeks I was going to be there and to help me be able to sleep on the plane. So uh I only took half because I have never taken sleeping pills before. But what I didn’t know was that you’re supposed to be in a fully lying-down position when you take sleeping pills.

【Cindy】OK.

【Alisa】You’re really not supposed to take them on airplanes because something about being sitting up when you take them is just not really right. Um so I took the pills or half of the pill.

【Cindy】Yeah.

【Alisa】And I don’t know how embarrassing this really is because I couldn’t really register it as embarrassing in this moment.

【Cindy】 Laugh.

【Alisa】But I woke up in the middle of the flight and I had a window seat right by the wing.

【Cindy】Uh huh.

【Alisa】And uh I looked out the window and it sounds insane because it is and I saw two men on the wing of the plane…

【Cindy】Laugh.

【Alisa】…dressed as nuns having a picnic on the wing of the plane.

【Cindy】Oh OK that’s nice.

【Alisa】OK a red-checkered blanket … like I still see it perfect … like perfectly in my head. And so I saw it and I thought “Oh my god.” And I turned to look at the lady or guy or I don’t remember (who was) sitting next to me and I made a face like …

【Cindy】(Laugh).

【Alisa】Are you seeing this? I remember the person being like “Woah.”

【Cindy】Kinda (kind of) like “what?”

【Alisa】Kinda (kind of) like backing up. And then me just continuing to push my like nose against the glass and…

【Cindy】(Laugh).

【Alisa】That’s pretty much all I remember. Um…

【Cindy】OK.

【Alisa】I don’t … I actually don’t have a stamp on my passport so I’m not really sure how I got off the plane.

Summary(要約)

Cindy asks Alisa about one of her most embarrassing moments. Alisa remembers an eight-hour flight to Europe when she really wanted to sleep and arrive feeling fresh and rested. Her dad gave her some sleeping pills, and since she had never taken them before, she decided to take only half of one.

In the middle of the flight, Alisa woke up in her window seat and looked outside. To her surprise, she saw two men dressed as nuns having a picnic on the wing of the plane. She says it sounds completely crazy, but the image looked very real to her at the time.

Alisa turned to the person sitting next to her with a look that said, “Are you seeing this?” The person looked confused and even started backing away from her. Meanwhile, Alisa kept pressing her face against the window and staring outside.

Alisa says that’s about all she remembers from the flight. She was so out of it that she doesn’t even remember how she got off the plane or through the airport. Looking back, it became one of her most unforgettable and embarrassing travel stories.

Phrases of the day(今日のフレーズ)

1) Come to mind(思い浮かぶ)

ちなみに、“Nothing comes to mind right now.”

  • What’s the first thing that comes to mind?
  • No one comes to mind right now.
  • That memory suddenly came to mind.

2) Supposed to(〜することになっている、〜するはずである)

例えば、“I’m supposed to meet her at noon.”

  • I’m supposed to work tomorrow.
  • The package was supposed to arrive yesterday.
  • You’re not supposed to use your phone during class.

3) Insane(正気ではない、ものすごい)

また、“That’s insane!”

  • The line was insane.
  • It’s insane how expensive everything has gotten.

4) Back up(後ろに下がる)

と言いたいときは“Can you back up a little?” また、「車をバックさせて」と言いたいときは“Back up the car.”

  • Can you back up the car a little?
  • Back up so I can open the door.
  • Back up! You’re too close.

5) Get off(降りる)

また、“get off at ~”は「~で降りる」、“get off here”は「ここで降りる」という意味になります。

  • I got off at the wrong station.
  • This is our stop. Let’s get off.
  • Let’s get off at the next stop.
