【Nienna】So, Tim, what Japanese product can you no longer live without?

【Tim】Our answers might differ here because mine’s a very nerdy, geeky one. When I was in Australia, I realized how much I love BOOKOFF. I know it’s not a product, but BOOKOFF is incredible. We need it in Australia.

【Tim】So I’m into retro gaming. And that’s probably why the pricing here has gone up so much, because I was taking advantage of it, buying all the cheap games here and books as well, DVDs. It’s incredible, all the secondhand stuff that’s there. Even some of the stuff that I bought for my son, the toys, it’s incredible. It’s heaven on earth.

【Nienna】Yeah, I was there recently. I don’t usually go, but recently…my husband’s Japanese, but he has an American friend coming to visit.

【Tim】Right.

【Nienna】And he’s saying, oh, he really wants to go to like this store. Why? And I had to explain. I was like, it’s really cool. Yeah.

【Tim】Incredible. I think another thing would be, again, it’s not really a product, but the internet. Like the internet, I don’t know about America, but Australia, it’s bad. And here it’s incredible. Like even rural Japan, middle of nowhere, a hundred times better. What’s it like in the States?

【Nienna】I think it really varies by where you are in the States. So yeah, but just, yeah, across the board, I think it’s better.

【Tim】Yeah. Okay. Okay. Yeah. And what about yourself? What kind of product couldn’t you live without?

【Nienna】For me, it’s like anything UV protection-related.

【Tim】Okay.

【Nienna】It’s like my sun umbrella because in the U.S., I mean, I guess it depends. If you’re in a very fashionable place, perhaps you can carry a sun umbrella.

【Tim】Yeah, yeah. I was going to ask, would you stand out if you had one of those…similar in Australia.

【Nienna】Yeah, I tried. In the US, I remember I was in rural Michigan trying to carry a sun umbrella and people were like, who’s this Victorian?

【Tim】Jump back in your time machine.

【Nienna】Yeah. And now I’m like, yeah, I fit in. I’m walking around with my sun umbrella and like my…my little, my little covers, and yeah, and I’m like…

【Tim】Yeah, my mom and sister came to visit, and they were exactly the same. They loved it. So my mom has very fair skin, so she’s one of those people who is like, she just darts from shade to shade; she refuses to be in the sun, so when she came here and saw all the products, uh, it was literally a day out. I didn’t plan for me to take her to this specific shop, but we spent ages there; she absolutely loved it.

【Nienna】Yeah, yeah. It’s not something I expected to fall in love with, for sure.

【Tim】Awesome.

Summary(要約)

Nienna asks Tim what Japanese product he can no longer live without. Tim says his answer is BOOKOFF because he loves retro gaming and buying secondhand games, books, DVDs, and toys there. He jokes that BOOKOFF is like “heaven on earth” for him.

Tim also says he loves the internet service in Japan. Compared with Australia, he feels the internet is much better, even in rural areas and places far from big cities. Nienna says internet quality depends on where you live in the US, but she also thinks Japan is generally better.

For Nienna, the answer is anything related to UV protection, especially sun umbrellas. She says using a sun umbrella in the US can make you stand out. When she tried using one in rural Michigan, people joked that she looked like someone from the Victorian era, but in Japan she fits right in.

Tim says his mother also loved all the sun-protection products when she visited Japan. She has very fair skin and usually tries hard to stay out of the sun, so she was excited to see so many useful products. Nienna agrees and says UV-protection products are something she never expected to fall in love with.

Phrases of the day(今日のフレーズ)

1) Take advantage of(〜を活用する、〜につけ込む)

例えば、無料体験を利用した場合は、“I took advantage of the free trial.”

  • We should take advantage of this opportunity.
  • I took advantage of the sale and bought two pairs of shoes.
  • Don’t take advantage of her kindness.

2) Secondhand(中古の、人づてに)

例えば、“I heard the news secondhand.”

  • I bought this couch secondhand.
  • Most of the furniture in my apartment is secondhand.
  • I often buy secondhand clothes.

3) In the middle of nowhere(何もないところ)

  • We got lost in the middle of nowhere.

4) Across the board(全面的に、全般的に)

例えば、“Prices have gone up across the board.”

  • The new rules apply across the board.
  • The company made budget cuts across the board.

5) Fall in love with(〜に恋をする、〜が大好きになる)

  • I fell in love with Japan during my first visit.
