【Joshua】So, where do you see yourself in 10 years? In the future?
【Jesse】Yeah, that’s a tough question. Hopefully, much the same. So I kind of…when you ask that question, I can think of it in a couple of different ways. There’s personally and then maybe professionally.
【Joshua】Let’s start with personally.
【Jesse】Personal? Yeah, that’s more fun anyway.
【Joshua】Yeah, I think so too.
【Jesse】Professional is boring, but personally, I hope that I’m roughly the same. I anticipate I’ll be the same height.
【Joshua】Yeah, probably.
【Jesse】Hopefully around the same weight. Otherwise, I’m guessing I’ll probably have a few more wrinkles…
【Joshua】Maybe.
【Jesse】Around my forehead. Probably have some kids at that point, if all goes according to plan. So maybe some gray hairs. Probably look a lot more tired.
【Joshua】Ah.
【Jesse】So I’m anticipating that as well.
【Joshua】Yeah.
【Jesse】Hobbies-wise, I hope I’m still playing basketball to some degree.
【Joshua】Oh, basketball.
【Jesse】Yeah. Yeah, that’s kind of a big…as you can tell from my height.
【Joshua】Yes.
【Jesse】Being six-four, I’ve always had a natural ability for that.
【Joshua】What position?
【Jesse】I’d say more of a small forward.
【Joshua】Small forward. Very nice.
【Jesse】That’s my natural position. I’m kind of a slighter frame, so it’s more about quickness than about power. That’s more fun anyway. You get to run around the court and things like that. So that’s one big thing I hope I’m still doing. Other than that, you know, just… What about yourself? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
【Joshua】You know, right…personally or professionally? That kind of…
【Jesse】Let’s go personally. If we have time, we’ll go professionally.
【Joshua】Yeah, okay. So personally, I hope that I’m still, you know, living life to the fullest. I hope that I’m still funny. You know, I hope that I’m funny right now, but…
【Jesse】Yeah, you are hilarious.
【Joshua】I hope that I’m funny in the future as well because, you know, I like to laugh and things like that. So personally, my hobbies…ever since I’ve dated my girlfriend, my hobbies have kind of been dwindling. I’ve been losing them one by one, and so hopefully…
【Jesse】Oh, that’s okay.
【Joshua】I know.
【Jesse】You find ways to hide your hobbies.
【Joshua】Yes.
【Jesse】Like, she hasn’t seen me play video games in about three years.
【Joshua】I know. I find…
【Jesse】She has no idea.
【Joshua】Definitely. I find myself staying up till about 2 a.m. at night, just after she sleeps, to sneak in a couple of hours of video games.
【Jesse】Right, exactly.
【Joshua】I feel ashamed. I feel dirty when I play video games. I feel like I’m lying to her, but…
【Jesse】Yeah, well, that’s…that’s part of what you sign up for.
【Joshua】That’s part of it. Yeah.
【Jesse】You’ve gotta…you’ve gotta balance both—her needs and your needs.
【Joshua】Definitely.

Phrases of the day(今日のフレーズ)
1) If all goes according to plan(すべて計画通りにいけば)
例えば、「すべて予定通りにいけば、私たちはお昼までには到着するはずです」は“If all goes according to plan, we should be there by noon.” ちなみに“if everything goes according to plan”と表現することもよくあります。
- If all goes according to plan, I should be done by 5.

2) To some degree(ある程度は)
例えば、相手の意見に100%賛成ではないものの「ある程度は同意する」のであれば、“I agree with you to some degree.”

We’re all responsible to some degree.
To some degree, I think she’s right.
3) Live life to the fullest(人生を思いっきり楽しむ)
“live life to the fullest”は、「人生を思いっきり楽しむ」「精いっぱい、悔いのないように生きる」という意味の表現です。 例えば、「人生は短いから、悔いのないように思いっきり生きたいです」は“Life is short, so I want to live life to the fullest.”

4) Sneak in(こっそり入る・忍び込む)

5) Sign up for([苦労や困難を承知の上で]選ぶ・受け入れる)
特に“That’s what you signed up for. 例えば、「子育ては時々本当に大変だけど、それも覚悟の上です」は“Being a parent is exhausting sometimes, but that’s what I signed up for.”
