【Emily】 So what do you think about cancel culture?

【Andy】 Crazy topic, crazy topic.

【Emily】 Yeah.

【Andy】 Umm, cancel culture is interesting because I feel like, on a very human level, people want there to be like, serious consequences for people doing like, dumb things. But I think…I think that’s a fair thing, but there are certain things where you do kind of feel like, personally, I think it gets a little…a little much. Um, people get canceled for, like, very small things, um, and I’m also a big believer that people can change, you know, um, like, for example, if you have people getting canceled for a tweet they made 10 years ago…

【Emily】 (Laugh).

【Andy】 And it’s like, you know, like I’m gonna give the benefit of the doubt and hope that, you know, they changed, like they were definitely younger.

【Emily】 Yeah.

【Andy】 Um, but…and I hope they learned, you know, from their mistakes, but you know, if they didn’t, yeah, cancel them. That’s, yeah.

【Emily】 No, yeah, I think…So I was a psychology major, and it was so shocking to me because on social media, I followed a lot of, like, therapists or, like, coaches, and there was this incident where this one mental health professional, she said something that was, yes, okay, maybe it was a little questionable.

【Andy】 Yeah.

【Emily】 But it wasn’t enough for all these therapists to start bullying her on social media and, like, they all ganged up on her in like a public space.

【Andy】 Right.

【Emily】 And I’m just like, you guys are therapists, right?

【Andy】 Yeah, right?

【Emily】 It really scared me because it’s like, we learn that there’s a way to instigate change in people by kind of holding a mind of curiosity about why that behavior is happening in the first place and separating, like, the behavior and the person because that’s the only way that you can actually change. I mean, you can shame your way into change, but then is it actual change?

【Andy】 Are you really learning anything?

【Emily】 Like, I understand there should be consequences for behavior because it’s like, yeah, like you should be responsible for the things that you say and do. But I feel like there definitely is a more effective way of creating change that doesn’t involve, like, you know, punishing people at that level.

【Andy】 Yeah, it gets a little extreme. And I think it’s it’s difficult now because people… it is easy to just say something online.

Summary(要約)

Andy and Emily talk about cancel culture and whether it sometimes goes too far. Andy understands why people want others to face consequences for doing or saying something wrong. However, he feels people sometimes get canceled for very small things.

Andy also believes people can change and learn from their mistakes. For example, he doesn’t think someone should automatically be judged today for a social media post they made 10 years ago. He wants to give people the benefit of the doubt and hope they have grown since then.

Emily shares a story about a mental health professional who said something questionable online. Many other therapists and coaches publicly criticized her and seemed to gang up on her. Emily was surprised because she felt their reaction looked more like bullying than a helpful way to create change.

Emily says people should be responsible for their words and actions, but she questions whether public shame really helps them change. She believes it is important to understand why someone behaved a certain way and help them learn from it. Andy agrees and says cancel culture can become especially extreme because criticizing someone online is so easy.

Phrases of the day(今日のフレーズ)

1) Consequence(報い)

例えば、「ルールを破ったら、それなりの報いを受けるよ」は“If you break the rules, there will be consequences.”

  • Every decision has consequences.
  • He made a bad decision and had to face the consequences.
  • She didn’t think about the consequences of quitting her job.

2) Give someone the benefit of the doubt(悪く決めつけず、良いほうに考える)

“give someone the benefit of the doubt”は、「疑わしい部分があっても、とりあえず相手を信じる」「悪く決めつけず、良いほうに考える」という意味の表現です。 例えば、「本当かどうかは分からないけど、とりあえずあなたを信じることにします」は“I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.”

  • I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt.
  • He said it was an accident, so let’s give him the benefit of the doubt.
  • She’s usually very reliable, so I’m going to give her the benefit of the doubt.

3) Bully(いじめる、いじめっ子)

例えば、「私は中学生の頃、いじめられていました」は“I was bullied in middle school.”

  • My son is being bullied at school.
  • She stood up to the bully.
  • Don’t let anyone bully you into doing something you don’t want to do.

4) Gang up on someone(集団になって一人を責める・いじめる)

例えば、「彼のクラスメイトはみんなで彼をいじめました」は“His classmates ganged up on him.”

  • Why is everyone ganging up on him?
  • They ganged up on her and blamed her for everything.
  • My kids always gang up on me when they want something.

5) In the first place(そもそも)

“in the first place”は、「そもそも」「初めから」「第一に」という意味の表現で、ある出来事の最初の理由や原因に戻って話すときによく使われます。 は“Why did you buy it in the first place?”

  • Why did you go there in the first place?
  • Why did you say yes in the first place?
  • I don’t know why I agreed to this in the first place.

Vocabulary(単語)

  • Instigate

Expressions(表現)

  • On a very human level
  • Psychology major
