【Miklos】I guess this kind of is a good segue. Standing out and fitting in.

【Lauren】Yes.

【Miklos】Like, in the U.S., at least when I was a kid, and maybe it’s this way now, but standing out was, well, it depends on how you stand out, but it was kind of acceptable and kind of rewarded, too. It’s like, yes, I’m a standout. They even give you an award for standout student.

【Lauren】Yeah.

【Miklos】Like, you know, being funny or talented or outspoken or athletic. Even in my yearbook, like, you know, in high school, it was like, oh, you know, best laugh.

【Lauren】Oh, like the superlative page.

【Miklos】The superlatives, yeah, senior superlatives.

【Lauren】Yeah.

【Miklos】That was celebrated, like to be, you know, artistic, the most artistic person, you know. And being different could become a part of your identity. So there was more room to be yourself, even if that came with, you know, social challenges once in a while. But in Japan, fitting in smoothly is more valued, not standing out, like especially in elementary school to a certain extent. And like, there’s a little bit of pressure not to disrupt the group or draw any negative attention.

【Miklos】And, um, kids in school, they kind of become aware of what is normal and expected in society, in their little microcosm of elementary school. And that can create strengths. Like, kids learn awareness of others and social sensitivity.

【Miklos】But it can also be difficult for kids who are highly individualistic or sensitive or unconventional or just on a different wavelength. You know, they’re just doing their own thing. Like you see that a lot. It’s great. So as a parent, I…I really admire the harmony. But at the same time, I worry about what that costs.

【Lauren】Mm mm.

【Miklos】Because, I see it most clearly when I have, like, an American friend come and visit for, you know, a few days. And there’s – you can see just starkly, you know, how, like, just even just being in the subway station, you know, I mean, there’s a – there’s the stereotype of, you know, the loud American.

【Lauren】Yeah.

【Miklos】That’s a stereotype for a reason. Like I’ve, I’ve been here long enough so I can kind of tone it down, you know, like, um, but when I…

【Lauren】It takes effort.

【Miklos】It really does. Cause I really, even my wife is Japanese and she keeps me in check. Um, she’s just like, uh, you’re kind of being a “gaijin” right now. I’m just like, oh, yeah, I’m sorry. I’ll turn that down to two.

Summary(要約)

Miklos says that when he was growing up in the US, standing out was often seen as a good thing. Students were praised for being funny, artistic, athletic, or unique, and schools even gave special awards for these qualities. He feels there was more freedom to express your individuality.

He says Japan has a different way of thinking, especially in elementary school. Children are encouraged to fit in with the group and avoid drawing negative attention. This helps students become more aware of others and work well together.

However, Miklos also thinks this can be difficult for some children. Kids who are very independent, sensitive, or different from others may have a harder time fitting in. As a parent, he admires the harmony in Japanese schools, but he also wonders what children might give up in order to achieve it.

Miklos says he notices this difference most when American friends visit Japan. He jokes that the stereotype of the “loud American” exists for a reason. Even after living in Japan for many years, he still has to make a conscious effort to be quieter, and his Japanese wife sometimes reminds him when he gets a little too loud.

Phrases of the day(今日のフレーズ)

1) Segue([次の話題や場面に]自然につなぐ/スムーズなつなぎ)

“That’s a good segue.(スムーズなつなぎですね)”のように名詞として使うこともできれば、“Let’s segue into the next topic.(次の話題につなげましょう)”のように動詞としても使えます。

  • This is a good segue into our next topic.
  • That kind of segues into what I wanted to talk about.
  • Your question is a great segue into the next section.

2) Room(余地)

  • There’s still room for improvement.
  • This job gives me room to grow.
  • We have plenty of room for one more person.

3) Draw attention(注目を集める)

  • She doesn’t like to draw attention to herself.
  • The sign drew my attention right away.
  • The new restaurant is drawing a lot of attention.

4) Tone down(控えめにする)

日常会話では、“tone down your voice(声のトーンを落とす)”や“tone down the language(言い方を和らげる)”のようによく使われ、例えば、“Tone it down. You’re being loud!”

  • Please tone down your voice.
  • He needs to tone down his attitude.
  • Maybe we should tone it down on the decorations.

5) Keep someone in check(人を暴走しないように抑える)

例えば、「妻はいつも、私が調子に乗りすぎないように注意してくれます」は“My wife always keeps me in check.”

  • My friends always keep me in check.
  • Someone needs to keep him in check.

  • Exercise keeps my stress in check.
