【Andy】 Do you believe college is still worth it nowadays?

【Emily】 Absolutely, yes.

【Andy】Okay.

【Emily】Yes, yes, yes. Because I know it’s a privilege to be able to go. And more and more, it’s becoming more difficult to be able to send, like, your kids to college. So I’m saying this with like, an understanding of that.

【Emily】But going to Uni changed who I was, like, fundamentally. Like, the way that I think, the way that I perceive things. And if I had kids, like, I would want them to have that experience so that they can navigate the world, in a more, um, intentional, mindful way, and I feel like you can’t get that if you don’t have, like, the education to back that type of thinking.

【Andy】For sure, yeah.

【Emily】 And you can only get that, I feel like, if you keep investing in your education no matter how hard it is.

【Andy】Mm-hm.

【Emily】 I mean obviously you can get that outside of, like, a university education, but it’s just so hard to have that structure, that community…

【Andy】Right.

【Emily】Like the mentors, like you’re going to meet all these amazing people because they’re all there in that one place and you can’t get that experience anywhere else.

【Andy】No. And I think, I feel like, we really need more education in this world. Like, what are we doing?

【Emily】Yeah, exactly. And we need to lower the price, like the hurdle and the walls to get into Uni. I think that’s the problem.

【Andy】Yeah. And it’s very, like, cause it is kind of sad. Like when I see, like, um, like I know, just so many people… Okay, not to call them out, put them on blast. My younger cousins, like, some of them don’t know, like, very basic things, like where it’s like, “Wait, what? You don’t know this?” Like, okay, for example, how to read an analog clock. I think that’s crazy. Like, how do you not know that? What? That is wild to me.

【Andy】But…And I feel like, um, yeah, like I think you do need, like, yes, you can get information on the internet, but like, how reliable is it, you know what I mean? Like, there’s a lot of misinformation out there. You go to college, like you said, like the structure, and like you have the people there that know what they’re talking about like, that’s just that’s a no-brainer, I feel like.

Andy also points out there is a lot of information online, but it isn’t always reliable. He worries about misinformation and feels college gives students a more organized way to learn from people who understand their subjects. For him, that makes the value of a college education pretty clear.

Phrases of the day（今日のフレーズ）

1) Mindful（～を意識する）

“mindful”は、「意識している」「気を配っている」「よく考えて行動している」という意味の形容詞です。ただ単に何かを知っているだけではなく、周りの人や状況、自分の行動などにきちんと意識を向けるニュアンスがあります。日常会話では“be mindful of ~（～を意識する・～に気を配る）”の形がよく使われ、周りの人への配慮、健康、お金の使い方など、さまざまな場面で使えます。例えば、「周りの状況に気を配ってね」は“Be mindful of your surroundings.”と言います。

2) Hurdle（壁、障害）

“hurdle”は、もともと陸上競技の「ハードル（障害物）」を意味する単語ですが、日常会話では比喩的に「乗り越えなければならない問題・障害・壁」という意味でよく使われます。単なる「問題」というより、目標を達成するためにクリアする必要がある壁というニュアンスがあり、仕事、勉強、お金、人間関係など幅広い場面で使えます。例えば、「彼はたくさんの障害を乗り越えてきた」は“He’s overcome a lot of hurdles.”といいます。

3) Call someone out（人の間違いや問題のある言動を指摘する）

“call someone out”は、「人の間違いや問題のある言動を指摘する」「おかしいことをはっきり本人に言う」という意味のカジュアルな表現です。ただ注意するというより、相手が間違ったことや失礼なこと、矛盾したことなどをしているときに、それを見過ごさずにはっきり指摘するニュアンスがあります。例えば、「彼女は、彼の態度が失礼だと指摘しました」は“She called him out for being rude.”と言います。

4) That’s wild（すごい、信じられない）

“that’s wild”は、「それはすごいね！」「それはヤバいね！」「信じられない！」を意味し、驚くような話を聞いたときのリアクションとして使われる、とてもカジュアルな表現です。ここでの“wild”は本来の「野生の」という意味ではなく、普通ではない・予想外・衝撃的な、というニュアンスで、良い話にも悪い話にも使えます。例えば、友達が安定した仕事をやめて、海外に引っ越したと聞いた時に、“Are you serious? 5) No-brainer（考えるまでもないこと）

“no-brainer”は頭を使って考える必要がないほど何かが簡単であることを表し、「考えるまでもない」や「当然」を意味します。特に何かを決断する時に「考えなくても分かることだよ」のような意味合いで使われ、“That’s a no-brainer.”と言います。例えば、海外での仕事のオファーを引き受けるか悩んでいる友達に対して、“That’s a no-brainer!
