【Sam】So, you know, talking about these frat parties and stuff…

【Vicki】(laughs)

【Sam】Clearly our—our favorite part of college was not the frat parties. But what—what did you…what did you like the most about college? And then, what do you remember as being the worst part? Or maybe, like a specific best and worst memory.

【Vicki】Yeah. Probably the best memories were, like with my choir. So, the extracurriculars. And I would say probably most of my friends would also say their—the best memories came from the clubs that they did.

【Sam】Yeah.

【Vicki】So, I was in a choir and it was a pretty big choir. There were 80 of us.

【Sam】Wow.

【Vicki】And it was kind of a formal choir. You know, wear tuxedos and all that. And we used to travel during the—the breaks to go on tour. So the tours were probably one of the best things. We got to go to Cuba, Spain, China…

【Sam】Whoa.

【Vicki】…Florida, which is…that was fun too.

【Sam】(laughs)

【Vicki】(laughs)

【Sam】That’s a little underwhelming though.

【Vicki】That was exciting, I know.

【Sam】You’re like, “We went to Cuba, Spain, China…and Florida.”

【Vicki】Yeah, Florida and…Hawaii. That was cool.

【Sam】Okay.

【Vicki】And, just like, traveling a little bit within—like, closer to our school, we went to…let’s see. We went to…the place where Ben & Jerry’s—Vermont.

【Sam】Yeah.

【Vicki】Vermont, that area. We went to D.C. So, the memories that, you know, I made with my friends…like, that was—that was awesome. But if had to choose, like the best memory, it actually wouldn’t be on tour but it’s still with my singing friends.

【Sam】Yeah.

【Vicki】So, it’s kind of a funny thing we used to do. Like, my—my friend, she also had a job singing at a church. It was a different church than the one I was singing at. And so she had a key for the church, actually.
And so sometimes, like around midnight, we would sneak into the church. And then one of my friends who can play the organ, he would, like play the organ, and we would, like get the hymn books out and would just start singing.

【Sam】(laughs)

【Vicki】“All right, Page 251!” And we go there. And—and sometimes they’d be, like a little—a little drunk. And, you know, we would just, like, you know—one o’clock in the morning, we’re pulling on the organ and singing hymns and it’s dark and there was, like nobody in the church. And it was—it was, like…we weren’t supposed to be there, so it’s like…

【Sam】Yeah.

【Vicki】Mm

【Sam】You

【Vicki】…it’s, like exciting. But it’s also like, the—the nerdiest thing we could’ve done.

【Sam】Yeah, this is the most…

【Vicki】People are partying. (laughs)

【Sam】Yeah, this is the most wholesome mischief I’ve ever heard of.

【Vicki】But I was like…

【Sam】“We—we broke into the church and we played some glorious music praising God!”

【Vicki】(laughs) It wasn’t even about, like, you know, that. It was just, like…we just loved singing.

【Sam】Yeah.

【Vicki】And, like we love, like, kind of old music.

1) Extracurricular （課外の）

生徒が学校の授業以外で取り組む課外活動をextracurricularと言います。一般的にはextracurricular activityと言い、部活動や生徒会、ボランティア活動などを指します。アメリカでは、高校の時にたくさんのextracurricular activitiesをすることで、大学に入る際により有利になります。

2) Let’s see（ええと）

let’s seeは何かを思い出そうとしている時や、次の言葉を考えている時などに使われる表現、日本語の「ええと」や「うーんと」に相当します。自分が次に言いたい表現が出てくるまで繋ぎ言葉として使える便利な表現です。

3) Sneak into（こっそり入る）

sneakは、人に気づかれないようにコソコソ動いたり、何かをこっそり持ち出す意味として使われます。「こっそり入る」はsneak into ____、「こっそり抜け出す」はsneak out ____、「〜にこっそり近づく」はsneak up on ____のように表現します。

4) Nerd（オタク）

nerdは本来「オタク」や「マニア」を意味する表現で、一つのジャンルに非常に興味を持っていたり、特定の分野に限っては異常なほど詳しい人を指します。オタクっぽい人はa nerdy person、オタクっぽいゲームはnerdy gamesと言います。

• ちなみに、nerdと呼ばれる人は外見もオタクっぽい人がほとんどです。

5) Break into（侵入する）

break intoは家やアパート、オフィスなどの建物に押し入ったり、侵入したりすることを表します。一般的に、ドアや窓などを壊して無理やり中に入ることを表し、家に泥棒が入った時、もしくは鍵がかかったドアを叩き壊すような状況で使われます。
