「生年月日」の英語表現

旅行先の入国審査時や留学中に生年月日を聞かれたり、書類などに生年月日を記入することは意外と多いものです。今回は、英語での生年月日の正しい言い方や書き方についてわかりやすく解説したいと思います。

生年月日はDate of birth(DOB)

正式な場面では、生年月日は英語で”date of birth”と表現します。”When is your date of birth?”は「あなたの生年月日はいつですか？」という意味になります。また、書類などでは、“Date Of Birth”を省略して“DOB”と記載されることもあります。ここで気をつけたい点として、アメリカの書類では、月と日を記入する順番が異なる場合があります。“DOB”の横に“mm/dd/yy”(月/日/年)または“dd/mm/yy”(日/月/年)と表記されているので、記入前に必ず確認しましょう。

A: Hi. Your name?
（こんにちは。お名前は？）
B: Patrick Wayne.
（パトリック・ウェインです）
A: Date of birth?
（生年月日はいつですか？）
B: December 16th, 1984.
（1984年12月16日です）

生年月日の言い方

生年月日を口頭で答えるときは、一般的に月から言います。例えば、生年月日が1991年12月20日の場合は“December 20th, 1991”と言います。日付の部分は”twentieth”または単に”twenty”と言っても問題ありません。年数の場合は日本語と違いがあります。英語では千と百の位、また十と一の位をセットで区切るのが一般的なため、1991年は”19”(nineteen)”91”(ninety-one)と表現します。2025年は20(twenty)25(twenty-five)になります。例外として、2000年から2009年は、year 2000(two-thousand)や2005(two-thousand five)と言います。2010年は2010(twenty-ten)と2010(two thousand-ten)、どちらでもOKです。特に“00”が続く場合に“two thousand”の言い方がよく使われます。
