【Alex】So CJ, what do you think…do you have any thoughts on the topic of perfectionism?

【CJ】Perfectionism…perfectionism, yeah. Actually, probably, I would consider myself a perfectionist.

【Alex】Me too. (laughs)

【CJ】Yeah, yeah, I mean…

【Alex】So this—this is a good topic.

【CJ】Yeah, right. That’s a good question. I mean—but at the same time, I would say that there has to be—I feel like I have…I feel like there’s a limit to it.

【Alex】Mm hm.

【CJ】So I guess maybe a better way for me to think about it—the way I think about it is…I like to do any—I like to do things as well as they can possibly be done, for the most part.

【Alex】Yes.

【CJ】But at the same time I realize that…

【Alex】Like your Level 1 kanji?

【CJ】Yes, exactly! (laughs)

【Alex】(laughs)

【CJ】My perfect line. Exactly.

【Alex】Number one. Your number one kanji.

【CJ】Right. But—but there’s a limit, you know?

【Alex】That is very Japanese to perfect.

【CJ】Well, you know, we’re imperfect…people are imperfect. So it’s like…

【Alex】Yeah.

【CJ】…I can only expect either so much from myself or other people. It shouldn’t. I—I feel like it shouldn’t be to the point that I can’t get something done because I’m too worried about making it absolutely perfect. That’s never going to happen.

【Alex】Mm hm.

【CJ】Or at least not realistically, right? It’s not going to happen.

【Alex】Right.

【CJ】So—so there’s—there’s a level to mine. I guess I can call myself a perfectionist. I don’t know. Maybe I’m not. But I’d like to think so, you know? I like things to be as nice as they can be. And sometimes that happens and sometimes it doesn’t. But…

【Alex】Yeah, yeah.

【CJ】…if nothing else, it’s a motivation to try to do…try to do something better the next time.

【Alex】Yes, yeah.

【CJ】So yeah. I think it can be a healthy thing. It—it can also be very unhealthy.

【Alex】Right, right, right. Yeah.

【CJ】Yeah.

1) Consider oneself（〜と考える）

considerは「〜と考える」や「〜と見なす」を意味することから、“I consider myself ~”は「自分自身を〜と考える」を意味します。特に自分自身に対する意見や思いを表したり、自己評価をする時に使われます。例えば、「私は自分を楽観的だと思っています」は“I consider myself optimistic.”と言います。

今日の会話でシージェーが言った“I would consider myself a perfectionist.”は、「私は自分を完璧主義だと思っています」を意味しますが、wouldを加えることによって100%完璧主義ではないかもしれないけど、状況に応じて完璧主義である自分がいる、というような断言しないニュアンスになります。もしかしたら、仕事においては完璧主義な自分がいるかもしれないが、趣味などに関してはそこまで完璧さを求めない自分もいるような意味合いになります。

2) That’s a good question（それはいい質問ですね）

3) Get something done（何かを終わらせる）

get something doneは何かを終わらせたり、完了させたりすることを意味する口語的な表現です。特に仕事やプロジェクト、家事や掃除など、あるタスクを責任を持ってやり終えるニュアンスがあります。例えば、上司に報告書を作るように頼まれて、「明日までに終わらせます」と返答する時に“I’ll get it done by tomorrow.”と言ったり、「出かける前に宿題を終わらせないといけない」と言う時に“I need to get my homework done before I go out.”と表現したりなど、カジュアルな場面でもビジネスの場面でも使える便利なフレーズです。

4) I would like to think that（〜であると考えたい）

I would like to think thatは自分の意見を述べるときに使われる表現で、「真相はわからないけど、〜であって欲しい」のようなニュアンスとして使われます。例えば、Facebookの個人情報の取り扱いに対し、多少の疑いはあるものの情報はしっかり保護されていると信じたいという気持ちを表す場合は、“I would like to think that Facebook protects our personal information.”となります。

また、自分の発言や意見を物腰柔らかく控えめなニュアンスにする役割もあります。例えば、「あなたは良い父親だと思いますか？」という質問に対して“I would like to think I’m a good father.”と答えると、「私は良い父親であると思いたいのですが・・・」というように謙虚な響きになります。

5) As ~ as can be（できる限り〜）

この表現は「できる限り〜である」を意味します。例えば、「できる限りデザインをシンプルにしたい」は “I want the design to be as simple as can be.”というように使われます。また、状況によっては「非常に〜だ」を意味し、veryやreallyをさらに強調した言い方として使われます。例えば「彼はすごくハッピーです」は“He is as happy as can be.”、「海はとても澄んでいる」は“The beach is as clear as can be.”のように表現します。
