【Chris】So what will you remember most about 2020?

【Mary】I think it’s an obvious answer that a lot of people are going to find memorable, but there’s no way to ignore coronavirus. It has completely impacted my life. (laughs)

【Chris】Yeah.

【Mary】I had my dream job that I loved and I lost.

【Chris】Hmm.

【Mary】But in a good way it has taught me to really appreciate things a lot. This year I went from working, like 80 hours a week…

【Chris】Wow.

【Mary】…to just hanging out with my daughter in the woods all day, every day.

【Chris】(laughs)

【Mary】And it’s been a huge change of pace and it’s been magical other than being sad about my job. (laughs)

【Chris】Yeah.

【Mary】How about you?

【Chris】It’s—it’s the same as you. I don’t think it can be avoided that that has to be my answer. Yeah, coronavirus. It’s…yeah. There’s been a lot of change for me. So this year I, up until August, I was running a company—a marketing company. And then I sold that company in August. That was the plan all year…

【Mary】Wow.

【Chris】…to sell it in August and the next month my plan was to move to Japan, to start teaching English.

【Mary】Ah.

【Chris】That has been put on hold for now.

【Mary】(laughs)

【Chris】So there’s a lot of, like, “Ah, when will things change?” waiting game happening right now.

【Mary】Yeah.

【Chris】Yeah.

【Mary】So big changes for you.

【Chris】Lots of changes, yeah.

【Mary】So it was your plan to sell the business even before coronavirus?

【Chris】Yeah, and then when I found out it was by June that I knew that my departure would be delayed, I still felt—like, I could have changed my decision, but I still felt like it was time to sort of close that chapter. It—it was—it was an interesting experience to run that business.

【Mary】Yeah.

【Chris】I had a lot of fun doing it, but I knew I needed to move on to do something else.

【Mary】Yeah. My story is not that different, except it was against my will…

【Chris】Ah, I see. (laughs)

【Mary】…because I was running a graphic design business and a lot of my clients were really hard hit. But I have really learned to slow down and just chill out and not be so anxious about work because I have no choice.

【Chris】Yeah, it’s a real paradigm shift, right?

【Mary】Yeah, and just a really—I feel like the universe is teaching me a lesson, like, “Hey, there’s this family in front of your face that, of course you loved before, but now you have a lot more time together, and make the most of it.” So it’s taught me to be more positive and kind of slow down a bit.

Phrases of the day（今日のフレーズ）

1) Change of pace（気分転換）

paceは「（歩く）速度」、そしてchange of paceは直訳で「速度を変える」となることから、この表現は気分を変えるために普段とは違うことをする「気分転換」を意味します。「気分転換に〜する」は____ for a change of paceと表しますが、of pace を省いて____ for a changeと表現することも日常会話では一般的です。例えば、「気分転換に散歩しよう」は「Let’s go for a walk for a change of pace.」または「Let’s go for a walk for a change.」のどちらを使ってもOKです。

2) Put on hold（〜を保留する）

put on holdは仕事や計画を「保留する」ことを表します。この表現には、外的要因によって予定していたことを延期するといったニュアンスが含まれます。例えば、予想外の問題が起こり「今取り組んでいるプロジェクトを一旦保留しないといけない」と表現する場合は「We have to put the project on hold.」と言います。

3) Waiting game（～を待つ）

4) Close the chapter（～の幕を閉じる）

close the chapter は「（本などの）章を閉じる」という意味ですが、日常会話ではある物事や出来事の幕を閉じることを表し、新しいチャレンジや新たな一歩を踏み出す準備ができているニュアンスが含まれます。「新たなスタートを切る」はopen a new chapterやstart a new chapter、begin a new chapterのように表します。

5) Make the most of（最大限に活かす）

このフレーズは自分に与えられた機会や出来事、物などを最大限に活かすことを意味します。特に、時間や条件にある程度の制限が設けられている状況で使われ、限られた時間を大切にする意味合いとして使う場合は「思いっきり楽しむ」や「満喫する」と訳した方が適切でしょう。
