会話内容「大好きなプロ野球チーム」

【Lawrence】Uh, so do you guys watch sports, play sports, have any favorite sports?

【Ken】Umm, yeah. I’m really big into sports. So uh, right now baseball is a big thing for me because Shohei Otani is here uh playing for the Angels. So actually, went to an Angels game a couple weeks ago, and saw him play, hit a double, so was a… was a pretty awesome experience. How about you guys, into baseball at all?

【Lawrence】Uh, not really but actually today… yeah today one of my students was telling me about umm… Otani’s injury that… with his uh elbow, I think it was?

【Deanna】What happened?

【Lawrence】Umm he tore his UCL, UCL is a tendon in the elbow.

【Deanna】Ooh!

【Lawrence】So it’s gonna (going to) be out for a while, might have to get surgery.

【Deanna】Oh no!

【Ken】Yeah, so he’ll be evaluated in a couple of weeks. But uh, it’s pretty unfortunate, but he’s had an amazing season so far. He’s done some very historic things. So uh, as far as baseball goes are you guys into Dodgers or Angels, those are our two local teams here.

【Lawrence】Umm, I’m kind of… umm my dad’s really into sports, especially baseball so I’m kind of a Dodgers fan by default. Umm, when I was little, like elementary school maybe beginning of middle school, I would go Dodger games, but I would say Dodgers if I had to choose.

【Ken】Okay.

【Deanna】And if any SoCal listeners are listening, I would cover your ears because I hate the Dodgers. I hate the Dodgers. Umm, I’m an Angels fan and a Giants fan actually ‘cause my family grew up in San Francisco. Umm, and I really like uh, yeah the players on the Giants. So, I don’t know if you’re… know any of them or Posey? Buster Posey.

【Ken】Yeah, sure, great player.

【Deanna】Yeah, I think he’s a great catcher and…

【Lawrence】Why are you only looking to Ken to ask if he knows players?

【Deanna】 (Laughs)

【Ken】 (Laughs)

【Deanna】Sorry! Lawrence what players do you…?

【Lawrence】Uh, I don’t know any players.

【Deanna】(Laughs) Well, hence that answers that.

【Ken】Yeah, but I’m in the same boat as you. I’m not a Dodgers fan umm my dad’s from San Diego, so I grew up as a Padres fan so yeah there’s a little bit of a rivalry between the Padres and the Dodgers so Padres fan but yeah uh Angels are awesome with Otani being there.

【Deanna】Yeah!

【Ken】Great to see.

Ken saw Otani hit a double at the game he attended. Lawrence learned from one of his students however that Otani suffered from a recent injury at the time, tearing his UCL (ulnar collateral ligament) in his elbow.

Ken himself isn’t a Dodgers fan either on account of his father who is from San Diego. The San Diego Padres have a rivalry with the Dodgers, and for that reason Ken doesn’t care much for the LA team.
父親がサンディエゴ出身であることから、ケンもドジャースのことはあまり応援していません。サンディエゴ・パドレスがドジャースとライバル関係にあるため、ケンはロサンゼルスを拠点とするドジャースがあまり好きではありません。

 

Phrases of the day（今日のフレーズ）

1) Big thing（大事なこと）

Big thingは直訳すると、「大きな物」になりますが、日常会話では「大事なこと」もしくは「とても人気があるもの」という意味で使われます。大きなことを達成したり、人生において大事な出来事であったり、または大流行している物事を指して使います。

• ちなみに、次に流行るものや次なる目玉はthe next big thingのように表現します。

2) Injury （けが・負傷）

Injury は「けが」や「負傷」を意味します。「けがをする」はhave an injury、「ひざを負傷している」はhave a knee injuryのように have と組み合わせてよく使われます。

• その他、動詞のinjureを使ってget injured（けがをする）や、injure one’s leg（足を痛める）のように表現することも一般的です。Hurtと同じ意味ですが、よりフォーマルな響きがあります。

3) As far as ____ goes （〜に関しては）

As far as ____ goes は「〜に関しては」や「〜に関して言えば」という意味のフレーズです。In regards to ____ や as for ____ と同じ意味を持ちますが、より口語的な響きがあります。例えば、「スポーツに関して言うとテニスが好きです。」は「As far as sports go, I like tennis.」と言います。

4) Cover one’s ears（耳を塞ぐ）

Cover one’s ears は「耳を塞ぐ」を意味するフレーズで、大きく分けて2つの状況で使われます。1つ目はアラームや警報の音があまりにもうるさくて実際に手で耳を塞ぐ時、そして2つ目は聞きたくないニュースや話に対して耳を塞ぐ時です。後者の場合は「〜に耳を傾けない」や「〜を無視する」といった意味合いになります。

• 日常会話では、cover one’s earsに限らず、close one’s ears やshut one’s earsという表現も一般的で、どれも意味は同じです。

5) Look to（〜を当てにする）

Look toは、「〜の方を向く」を意味することから、日常会話では「〜をあてにする」や「〜を頼る」を意味します。Rely onと同じ意味ですが、 look toは物に頼るのではなく、人を当てにしたり、誰かにアドバイスを求めたりする状況で使われるのが一般的です。今日の会話では実際に「〜を見る」の意味で使われています。
