【Kristen】But that reminds me. Also, I think in, like Fourth Grade I started reading, um A Series of Unfortunate Events.
【Kai】Oh, right, right. That’s a great book.
【Kristen】I really loved that series.
【Kai】Yeah.
【Kristen】Like it was so, like interesting and well-written and like, of course it has kind of that, like snarky, like kind of humor to it which, like was really fun to read at that time. And then I also really like The Princess Diaries.
【Kai】Oh.
【Kristen】Which is like, of course like—I think that my generation was kind of, like when Harry Potter started picking up.
【Kai】Right, right.
【Kristen】But I actually never got into it. (laughs)
【Kai】What?
【Kristen】I know, I know.
【Kai】(laughs)
【Kristen】Everyone hates me when I say this, but I never got into it, because…
【Kai】Why not?
【Kristen】I tried to read it and I was just like, “Oh, it’s so big,” and like all dark and, like not fun for me. I’d rather read The Princess Diaries.
【Kai】Oh.
【Kristen】I’d rather be a princess than a wizard, or something. So… (laughs)
【Kai】I cannot sympathize with that. (laughs)
【Kristen】I’m sorry. (laughs) I apologize.
【Kai】Harry Potter’s definitely up there for me.
【Kristen】Yeah, yeah.
【Kai】I mean, I think it came out when I was at least eleven…
【Kristen】Mm.
【Kai】…and my mom had brought it home. So I was telling her, right, I like read books ahead of my age.
【Kristen】Mm.
【Kai】She had brought home Harry Potter and it was on the kitchen table, and I was like, “What is this child’s book?”
【Kristen】(laughs)
【Kai】Like, what is—what is the deal with this? And then, like, my mom’s like, “I heard it’s really good. Like, you should try to read it.” And I was, like very arrogant about that, and I was like, “I don’t know about that, Mom.” And then… (laughs)
【Kristen】(laughs)
【Kai】Like, I started reading it and I literally finished it, like that day.
【Kristen】Oh.
【Kai】Like I was obsessed with it.
【Kristen】Mm.
【Kai】And I reread it again and again.
【Kristen】Wow.
【Kai】And I was like, “Oh my God, this book’s really good.”
【Kristen】Yeah, I think I read, like half of the first, and then I was just kinda (kind of) like…mm, whatever. I just kind of left, and never went back to it. I think I also, like when I watch the movies—I can’t remember which one…
【Kai】Oh.
【Kristen】But there’s one scene where, like a cat is, like killed or something.
【Kai】Oh.
【Kristen】It’s like, not really killed, or something.
【Kai】Right.
【Kristen】It’s something the teacher…
【Kai】Yeah.
【Kristen】Like, that image, like traumatized me almost a kid.
【Kai】I think that’s probably the first one. (laughs)
【Kristen】So I was really, like…’cause (because) I always loved animals, especially as a kid.
【Kai】Oh.
【Kristen】So seeing that, I was just…I couldn’t stand seeing it. Like…so that kind of, “No! No Harry Potter. I can’t. There’s a cat. There’s a dead cat. So, I can’t do it.”
【Kai】(laughs)
【Kristen】So that was another reason I could never get into it.
【Kai】But it was a really great series. I felt like, growing up with it…
【Kristen】Yeah, I understand.
【Kai】…like, I started it as a child, and I ended up finishing it off in college.
【Kristen】Yeah, yeah.
【Kai】And, like I continue the whole way…

【Kai】…of, like reading those books.

Sympathizeはsympathyの動詞形で、「同情する」ことを意味します。本来は相手の苦しみや悲しみなどに対する同情の念を指しますが、単純に同意したり共感する際にも使われることがあり、必ずしも不幸な出来事に共感する場合にのみ使われるわけではありません。
- I can sympathize with you because I’ve been through the same thing.

3) What’s the deal with（〜はどうなっているんだ）
Dealと聞くと、「契約」や「取引」という意味が最初に思い浮かぶかもしれません。ですが、dealにはその他にも「状況」や「問題」という意味もあり、状況や事態を知りたい時に、この表現が使われます。
- ちなみに、「What’s the deal?」だけで、「どうなってんだ？」、「何事だ？」という意味になります。

4) Traumatized（トラウマになる）
Traumaは、過去に起きた衝撃的な出来事による精神的なショックや心の傷を指し、日本語でも「トラウマ」と言いますが、その動詞形がtraumatizeです。
- 「〜に精神的ショックを受ける」はtraumatized by 〜と表現します。
- That accident traumatized him.
（あの事故で彼は精神的にショックを受けました。）
- I almost drowned the first time I went surfing. That traumatized me.
（初めてサーフィンをした時に溺れかけたんだ。あれがトラウマになってるよ。）
- A dog bit her when she was a kid. She’s been traumatized ever since then.

5) Can’t stand something （〜に耐えられない）
Can’t stand somethingは「〜に耐えられない」を意味する表現です。食べ物や場所、人の振る舞いなどについて「大嫌い」というニュアンスが強く、I don’t like somethingに置き換えて使うことができます。
- I can’t stand the smell of smoke. It gives me a headache.

２つ質問があります。
１．Traumatizeの使い方
「～がトラウマになっている」を表現する際、Phrases of the day では
(Something) traumatized (someone)
(Someone) was traumatized by (something)
の２とおりが記されています。
どちらも同じことを言っているのは分かるのですが、ネイティブスピーカーはこの２つの表現の仕方をどう使い分けているのでしょうか？
こういう場合はこちらで表現する、というような違いはありますか？
２．call off と cancel
Junさんのイントロで、いざ旅行に行くとなるとゴロが具合が悪くなるので中止せざるを得なくなると話していらっしゃいましたよね。
このとき call off を使っていましたが、call off と cancel のニュアンスと使い方の違いを教えてください。
最後になりましたが、いつも気になっていたのでお聞きします。
