【John】Yeah, Tokyo apartments are pretty cool. Um but one thing they don’t have here—‘cause (because) winters are freezing over here, a lot colder than I expected.

【Lauren】Yeah.

【John】And um, something I got used to over in Korea was this thing called “ondol,” which is almost every apartment in the entire country has heated floors.

【Lauren】Oh, okay.

【John】So you just turn on the heating and it really toasts up your apartment.

【Lauren】Mm hm.

【John】But over here they do…is it kotatsu?

【Lauren】Kotatsu, yeah the small little tables that you, like have the blanket over you.

【John】Yeah, that thing’s pretty cool. I’ve never seen that before.

【Lauren】Uh huh. Yeah I’ve…I mean, my apartment, like I said, way too small to have one of those, but I’ve gone to, like the traditional, uh ryokans, I think that’s what they’re called. The Japanese…

【John】Ah yeah, ryokan.

【Lauren】Yeah, yeah, the Japanese-style, um hotels. And those are so nice when you get under one of those.

【John】Yeah, toasty.

【Lauren】Mm hm. (laughs) Yeah, I also, um…the bath in my apartment, uh has, I don’t know. I’ve never really been a fan of baths, but once you start going into, like so many onsens and, just the way that they crank that heat up on that temperature of water.

【John】Yeah. (laughs)

【Lauren】It’s so nice. When you get out, your body feels, like, just…like you just got a massage. It’s like so relaxing. I’ve been doing that a lot.

【John】Yeah, I feel you. How is your bathroom at your apartment? Is it pretty small as well? Or…

【Lauren】Um that was another thing that I made sure I had a…I spent a little bit more money on housing to get the nicer bathroom because…

【John】Good call. I should’ve done that.

【Lauren】Yeah, when I was searching for them, there was some that had like, the sink on—overlapping the shower and then just a small little toilet. So mine had, like one—mine has one room for a toilet and then I have one room for my, like sink and my washing machine, and then another separate room for, like my wet room, where…is where you can, like take the proper, like Japanese shower and then take a bath, and…

【John】Mm hm. Oh nice, that sounds great. Mine’s more like a…airplane bathroom.

【Lauren】(laughs)

【John】Like, it’s so tiny it’s unbelievable.

【Lauren】Yeah, I just couldn’t do that. I was like, “No.”

Phrases of the day（今日のフレーズ）

1) Freezing（非常に寒い）

Freezeは本来、「凍る」を意味することから、日常会話では、気温が低く非常に寒い時に「It’s freezing.」と言います。「超寒い」に相当する表現で、基本的に話し言葉として用いられます。

2) Toasty（暖かい）

Toastyは、快適な暖かさを表す形容詞で、暖房の効いた部屋や室温について話す時によく使われます。今日の会話でジョンは「Toast up」と言いましたが、これはHeat up（暖まる）と同じ意味を持つ造語です。

3) Crank up（〜を上げる）

テレビやステレオの音量や、エアコンの温度などを上げることをCrank upと言います。Turn upと同じ意味ですが、音量や温度をさらに上げるニュアンスがあり、Turn upの口語的な言い方です。ちなみに、Turn downをCrank downとは表現できないので気をつけましょう。

4) I feel you（言いたいこと分かるよ）

I feel youは、相手に対して共感や同意を示すあいづち表現で、I understandやI agree with youのインフォーマルな言い方になります。

5) Good call（良い判断）

Good callは、相手の判断や提案に同意する時に使われるあいづち表現です。That’s a good decision.（それは良い判断だ）と同じ意味を持ちますが、より口語的でフレンドリーな響きがあります。
