【Lauren】How’s your experience been with washing your clothes? Do you have a washer in your room?

【John】You know what? I don’t have too many complaints about my washer, but I hear there’s a lot of issues, like um, never quite getting things all the way clean. Maybe it’s because of the cold water.

【Lauren】Oh yeah.

【John】Like they don’t connect it to both the cold and the hot water here.

【Lauren】Mm hm.

【John】Or maybe that’s just some apartments.

【Lauren】Yeah I actually—there’s…it seems like there are many settings on my washing machine, but my realtor told me, “On,” “Go.”

【John】(laughs) Yeah.

【Lauren】So…the only two buttons that I know. It’s the only things that I know how to wash, so pretty much go to that. But my first experience buying a detergent…this is just a language thing, it’s not really on Japan.
 
But I accidentally bought, uh fabric softener, so that could be why my clothing was not getting washed properly because I used that for, like two months until finally I was like, “Hm, this is fabric softener. This is not wash.” So.

【John】Yeah shopping here, especially if it’s your first time moving to Japan, and you’re not super familiar with the language, just deciphering any product…

【Lauren】Yeah. (laughs)

【John】…becomes, like an amazing journey.

【Lauren】Yeah I still try to, like buy one thing that I don’t know what it is every time I go just to, like…

【John】Oh, dude that’s a great strategy.

【Lauren】Yeah, ‘cause (because) there’s all these, like bags with like, you know, um, pickled vegetables and just all these, like different sauces and like, “Well we’ll see what we can do with this.”

【John】Do you have any horror stories with that?

【Lauren】Uh…not really horror stories but, um, definitely there’s been a few things that were either hit or miss. Either they’re really good, and now I get them quite often, or, I’m like, “I will never eat that again.” (laughs)

【John】(laughs)

By accident, the first time Lauren went shopping for laundry detergent, she bought fabric softener. She spent two months using it before realizing the mistake.
ローレンは初めて洗剤を買いに行った時に、誤って柔軟剤を買ってしまいました。その誤りに気づくまでに、彼女は2カ月間、柔軟剤を使っていました。

When Lauren goes shopping, she generally tries to buy one new item each time. Sometimes the products she buys she likes, and she regularly buys them, and sometimes she doesn’t like what she buys, and never buys that product again.

Phrases of the day（今日のフレーズ）

1) Washer（洗濯機）

WasherはWashing machineの略で、「洗濯機」を意味します。日常会話では、Washerと言ってもWashing machineと言っても大差はなく、個人の好みで使い分けされます。

2) You know what?（あのね）

「You know what?」は直訳すると「知ってる？」ですが、日常会話では、「あのね」や「ねぇ、ちょっと聞いて」といった意味合いで使われます。相手が驚いたり関心を持ちそうなことを言う前に使われる定番のフレーズです。また、話を切り出す際に相手の注意を引くためにも使われます。

3) Accidentally（思わず・間違えて）

うっかりコーヒーをこぼしたり、乗る電車を間違えてしまうなど、思わず何かをしてしまうことをAccidentallyと言います。一般的に、避けたい事態に陥ってしまう場合に使われることが多いですが、偶然何かを発見したり作り出したりするポジティブな意味合いでも使われます。

4) Horror stories（悲惨な体験談）

Horror storyは直訳すると「怖い話」ですが、日常会話では、「悲惨な体験談」や「失敗談」を指します。Bad experienceをやや大げさにした表現です。

5) Hit or miss（いちかばちか）

直訳すると「当たりかハズレか」で、成功と失敗の確率が五分五分であることを表します。事前の準備や計画が全くなく、結果を運に任せるニュアンスが含まれます。Hit and missとも言います。
