【Sharon】So, uh Josh, it’s often said that, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” What do you think about that?

【Joshua】I think that this is one of the proverbs that I find to be absolutely true. I don’t think there’s anything on this planet that can—that could be considered universally useless.
 
Uh, actually I take that back. There are probably a couple things that everyone on this planet might find completely useless but uh…um, like a—like a VHS tape, but…

【Sharon】I’m totally in favor of recycling and giving life and hand-me-downs, or hand-me-overs…

【Joshua】Right.

【Sharon】…and get more use. I mean, how many times have we had clothes that no longer fit us?

【Joshua】Right.

【Sharon】And you’re like, “I really don’t wanna (want to) give this away, but it doesn’t fit me anymore, but I hate to just throw it in the trash.”

【Joshua】Right.

【Sharon】And so, um, you know…or just things I’ve collected. I mean even eBay, or if you look at garage sales. When I lived in El Segundo, every weekend, there were just dozens of garage sales and I would go running by and looking over and going, “What trash.”
 
But then you see these people who get up at, like six in the morning, seven in the morning so they can be the first to find, “the deal.”

【Joshua】Right.

【Sharon】And so it does kind of make this, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” true…

【Joshua】Right.

【Sharon】…because when you look at so many things that people give away…um, however, like you said, it’s a matter of perspective because I might see this as treasure…

【Joshua】Right.

【Sharon】…and the other person on the buying end might see it as trash…

【Joshua】Right.

【Sharon】…or vice versa. I might be going, “I just want to get rid of all these old books.”

【Joshua】Right.

【Sharon】“What do I need books…it’s—it makes it heavy to move around with books.”

【Joshua】Mm.

【Sharon】However if I offer them for fifty cents, somebody’s going, “Wow, classics!”

【Joshua】Classics.

【Sharon】“They’re a treasure.”

【Joshua】(laughs)

【Sharon】So it is a matter of perspective…

【Joshua】Right.

【Sharon】…and it’s always good to give things away…

【Joshua】Right.

【Sharon】…and to clean up.

【Joshua】Yeah.

【Sharon】And hopefully somebody else will find value in them.

【Joshua】Yeah.

Sharon talked about her life in El Segundo. While living there, she would see people wake up at six or seven o’clock in the morning just to look at garage sales.

Sharon said it was a good idea to give away certain things one might have that they don’t need anymore. Not only does this help with cleaning, but also someone might find value in something the original owner did not.
シャロンは、不要になった物を手放すのはいいアイデアだと言いました。物の整理ができるからだけでなく、元の所有者には見出せなかった物の価値を、他の誰かが見出すかもしれないからです。

 

Phrases of the day（今日のフレーズ）

1) Take back（発言を取り消す）

Take backは、会話の中での発言を「取り消す」という意味のフレーズです。誤った発言をしたり、つい言いすぎてしまった後で自分の非を認める際に、「I take that back（今言ったことを撤回します）」と言います。人に嫌味や悪口を言われた場合には、「Take that back.（さっき言ったこと取り消しなさい）」と言うこともできます。

2) Hand-me-down（お下がりの）

Hand downというフレーズは本来、 後世に遺産を残したり、習慣や伝統を伝えていくことを意味しますが、Hand-me-downは日常会話で「お下がり」を意味し、使い古しの洋服や家具を指す場合に使われます。今日の会話では、シャロンが 「hand-me-over」とも言っていますが、 hand-me-downが正しい言い方です。

3) I hate to（〜したくない）

Hateは「大嫌い」や「憎む」など、かなり重みのある言葉なので、あまり軽々しく使ってはいけないと言われています。しかし日常会話で「〜したくない」を「I hate to…」と表現するのは一般的で、 「I don’t want to…」と同じ意味合いになります。この表現は、何かをしたくないがせざるを得ない、また、言いたくないが言わざるを得ない、という意味合いが込めれています。

4) Dozens of（数十個の/数十人の）

Dozenは、同じ種類のものが12個のセットになった「1ダース」を意味する単語ですが、日常会話では、「数十個の〜」や「数十人の〜」などをdozens ofと表現し、何かが沢山ある意味として用いられます。ちなみに、 half a dozenは「6個」、a dozenは「12個」、 2 dozenは「24個」となります。

5) Look over（ざっと目を通す）

Look overは、書類や報告書、宿題やエッセーなどを一通りざっと見ることを意味し、Checkの代わりに使うことができます。内容に間違いや問題がないか、ざっと目を通して確認する状況でよく使われる表現です。
