会話内容「遠距離恋愛」

【Mari】Did you guys do long distance?

【Alisa】Mm hm.

【Mari】Oh wow.

【Alisa】So I…we met in January and I stayed there for the academic year uh so we dated, uh we officially started dating in March and then we dated March, April, May and then I traveled in Europe a little bit.

【Mari】Mm hm.

【Alisa】And uh spent most of June in Portugal with him. Then I had to fly home.

【Mari】Mm hm.

【Alisa】Uh and I did, let’s see I had to finish my last year of my undergraduate, I had my senior year. So I went home and he came to Utah, mm in November so he came around Thanksgiving time.

【Mari】Uh huh.

【Alisa】And he stayed until February. So he got to stay for a couple months. And then he went back to France.

【Mari】Mm hm.

【Alisa】And then uh after I graduated in May I went to France.

【Mari】Oh wow.

【Alisa】And I spent the summer there.

【Mari】Uh huh.

【Alisa】That was my graduation gift to myself was uh my summer in France and Portugal. And then uh he got a job in California and so we got his visa paid for before he came and then we moved here.

【Mari】Oh so that’s the reason why you came to California?

【Alisa】Mm hm yup that’s what brought us here. Yeah I didn’t want to come to California at all (laugh). But that’s where the job was and now here we are.

【Mari】(Laugh). Oh wow. And how was it when um like he met your family?

【Alisa】Um my mom didn’t take it very seriously for a long time. I mean…she just thought that I was studying in France and dating some French guy you know, just messing around and having fun. Um so it took her a long time to realize that I was serious about that. Um and then after that they were just really excited. They were very, like really excited. They’d heard all about this mysterious French boyfriend but they’d never met him.

【Mari】Right.

【Alisa】And things were getting serious and so they were just really excited. Um but he’s from…he’s kind of an only child, he has one half sister but they never grew up in the same house or anything.

【Mari】OK. Uh huh.

【Alisa】So he grew up as an only child and I have…I’m from a family of six kids so I was really concerned that it was gonna (going to) be a totally overwhelming for him that my little sister would be climbing all over him, being crazy (laugh). But it all went over really smoothly. They, I mean my parents are happy that I’m happy, he loves my parents because I love my parents so it all went over really well.

In the beginning, Alisa’s mom didn’t think Alisa’s relationship with her fiancé was serious. But once her mom realized that they were seriously dating, she was very happy and excited.

1) Senior（４年生 ）

◎「Senior」の直訳は「年上の人」や「高齢者」になりますが、アメリカでは高校４年生または大学４年生のことを「Senior」と表します。１年生は「Freshman」、２年生は「Sophomore」、３年生は「Junior」、そして４年生は「Senior」になります。

2) At all（全然〜でない / 全く〜でない）

◎「At all」は否定文でよく使われ、「少しも〜でない」や「全然〜でない」のように、否定する気持ちを強調する役割があります。例えば今日の会話でアリサさんは「I didn’t want to come to California at all」と言っていましたが、ここではカリフォルニアに来たくなかったことを強調しています。
◎「At all」は基本、文末で使われます。

3) Mess around（ふざける）

◎「Mess around」は使われる状況により様々な意味を持ちますが、日本語の「ふざける」に最も近い表現でしょう。物事に「真剣に取り組まない態度」のニュアンスがあります。
