【Jason】So Christian, what was your first job?

【Christian】My first job was, actually, I think a little before high school. It was an under-the-table job.

【Jason】(laughs)

【Christian】…at a local pharmacy. I don’t even…thinking back at it now, I don’t even know how I got the job or was allowed to be in there, ‘cause (because) it’s like, you know, pharmaceutical drugs and I’m just a little kid.

【Jason】A little illegal, I think.

【Christian】That’s…yeah, highly illegal I think.

【Jason】(laughs)

【Christian】Thinking of it, now it’s like, “How did I get away with that?” And um…so anyway, I was just, like the…kind of like the…register guy…

【Jason】Mm hm.

【Christian】Like, I was always supervised, but like, I was, uh working at the register and I would just, like, you know…prescription, and I’d find it, give it to them. And like, I’d handle money. But like—and I’d always get paid under, like, under-the-table.
Um, like I think it was really cheap back then, but I can’t even remember now. But yeah, that was my first job. And I remember slacking off really hard, ‘cause I had no clue or value of what, like work was.

【Jason】Mm hm.

【Christian】I would sometimes, like probably take a nap.

【Jason】(laughs)

【Christian】And they would have to wake me up. I really think it was ‘cause, like my family was really good friends with them…

【Jason】Mm hm.

【Christian】…and I wanted to experience it, or something. But I really, like…that was…it’s such a crazy thing to, like—I was a little kid working in, like a pharmaceutical um…like Mom and Dad shop.

【Jason】Oh my gosh. (laughs)

【Christian】(laughs)

【Jason】‘Cause I—that was actually my first unpaid job. My uncle owned a restaurant.

【Christian】Oh.

【Jason】And so he was like, “You know, I need extra hands. Is Jason available?” And my Dad would be like, “Of course he is.”

【Christian】(laughs)

【Jason】So you know, sometimes like, two or three days a week, during the summer especially, I would have to go and just clean dishes.

【Christian】Oh yeah, yeah.

【Jason】Clean dishes, clean off tables, be the bus boy. And I made no money off that. But my first paying job was in high school when I was 17. I worked at Pinkberry, the frozen yogurt shop.

【Christian】Ah, that’s good. (laughs)

【Jason】Yeah, so—and, it was fun because I worked a lot with my high school friends.

【Christian】Oh, cool.

【Jason】And so it was a little bit different than the other Pinkberrys mainly because…because all the—my coworkers were not your typical Pinkberry looking people. They all had gauges. They all had tattoos. They all had piercings. So we had people come in, you’re like, “Hi, welcome to Pinkberry.” They’re like, “Am I at the right place?” And we’re like, “Yup, you sure are.” (laughs)

【Christian】(laughs)

Jason’s first paid job however was at a Pinkberry frozen yogurt shop in high school. He enjoyed it because many of his coworkers were his high school friends. However, Jason thought that many of his coworkers looked different than typical Pinkberry employees, since many had tattoos and piercings.
ジェイソンが初めて働いて賃金を得たのは、高校時代のアルバイトで、ピンクベリーというフローズンヨーグルトショップでした。同僚の多くが高校の友人だったこともあり、彼にとってそこでの仕事は楽しいものでした。しかし、同僚の多くはタトゥーやピアスをしており、典型的なピンクベリーの従業員とは見た目が違っていたとジェイソンは思いました。

 

Phrases of the day（今日のフレーズ）

1) Under-the-table（不法な ）

Under-the-tableは「不法な」を意味する表現です。未成年や不法移民が飲食店で不正労働し、現金で賃金が支給されたり、税金を逃れる目的で現金取引をするような状況でよく使用されます。直訳すると「テーブルの下で」ですが、バレないようにテーブルの下で現金の受け渡しをしている状況を想像すると、この表現の意味を理解しやすいでしょう。

2) Slack off（怠ける）

Slack offは、仕事や勉強、運動などを「怠ける」「サボる」という意味の表現です。手抜きを注意する時は「Stop slacking off.（こら、サボるな）」と言います。

3) Mom and dad shop（家族経営の小さな店）

直訳すると「ママとパパの店」ですが、この表現は、夫婦や家族経営の、フランチャイズ化されていない小規模のお店を指します。

• Mom and pop shopと言っても同じです。

4) Extra hands（手助け）

Extra handsは直訳すると「余分な手」ですが、忙しく助っ人が必要であったり、手を貸したりする状況で使われる表現です。正確にはan extra pair of handsですが、日常会話ではextra handsと略すことがあります。

5) Make money off（〜でお金を稼ぐ）

お金を稼いだりお金もうけすることを、make money off ____ と言います。Make money offの後には、仕事やバイト、株や不動産など、具体的な収入源や稼ぐ方法が入ります。
