【Kelly】What is something that you think, small thing, that happens in Japan that you think ー it would just never happen in America?

【Deanna】Yes. So I don’t know if this is because … it’s just my husband that does this. He’s actually Japanese.

【Kelly】Okay.

【Deanna】Or he just happens to be Japanese, you know. Um, but he does this thing where every time he eats like a bag of chips. Or has like a can or a juice box. I think maybe you might know where I’m going with this, but he’ll like…

【Kelly】No.

【Deanna】No? Are you not sure? He like…

【Kelly】I’m, I’m intrigued.

【Deanna】Oh, okay. He just folds it up into like this perfect little beautiful origami type thing.

【Kelly】Okay.

【Deanna】And I asked him, I’m like, oh my gosh, is this a Japanese thing? Like it’s so beautiful. I just crumple up my trash and throw it away.

【Kelly】Yeah, yeah.

【Deanna】He was like, “Oh, I don’t know, I’ve just been doing this since I was young,” but I don’t know. Have you…

【Kelly】I definitely have seen the plastic bag, like in America, I feel like we have a bag of bags and you just like throw them in there. I’ve definitely seen almost every Japanese person I know do the little like triangle, folds your bags up.

【Deanna】Right.

【Kelly】So maybe it’s similar to that, or maybe it’s because like recycling culture in Japan is so much bigger and so much stricter than, at least in most parts of America.  

【Deanna】 That’s what I was thinking, like on a bigger scale, that’s maybe he’s just trying to be more efficient and like less wasteful with his stuff.

【Kelly】Yeah.

【Deanna】But he said he’s just doing it, and it’s like, it’s so perfectly folded, like I…yeah. You’ll have…I have to show you.

【Kelly】 Dang. That’s a good talent. That’s like a hidden talent.

【Deanna】I know. And he does it without thinking like he’ll just like be watching tv and I’m like…

【Kelly】Wow.

【Deanna】It’s very strange.

【Kelly】That’s so interesting, though.

Phrases of the day（今日のフレーズ）

1) Happen to be（たまたま〜だ）

“happen to be ～”は「たまたま〜である」「偶然〜だ」という意味で、特別な計画や意図はなく、偶然そうなっていることを自然に伝える表現です。例えば、「偶然にも私の隣人は有名な俳優なんです」は“My neighbor happens to be a famous actor.”と言います。

ちなみに、“Do you happen to ~?”と疑問形にすると「ひょっとして〜ですか？」という意味になり、“Do you ~?”よりも控えめな尋ね方になります。例えば、友達に「ひょっとしてブライアンを知っている？」と聞く場合は、“Do you happen to know Brian?”と言います。

2) Where I’m going with this（何を言おうとしているか）
