【Phillip】Hi Bri. So could you tell me a little bit about what comes to your mind when you think of autumn?

【Bri】Yeah. For me, I think of the leaves changing color. We get lots of maple trees here. So they turn either red or orange or orange. That looks really, really pretty. And also the colder weather. I really like the colder weather.

【Phillip】Yeah, it’s the same here. Like as soon as it hits autumn, we’re sort of like, “Thank God it’s not summer anymore.”

【Bri】Yeah.

【Phillip】Right? And that’s pretty much all across Australia. Like, even in my area in Australia—in Western Australia, we don’t have rain for, like two or three months. You know, and when that autumn hits, we’re like, “Finally it’s going to start cooling down.”

【Bri】For sure. How hot does it get in the summer where you are?

【Phillip】Where I am, usually around Christmas week, New Year’s, it gets up to about 45 degrees (Celsius), right?

【Bri】Oh!

【Phillip】And that’s a real dry 45 degrees. The way I think of it is it’s kind of like opening an oven, and then all that hot air just hits you. It’s kind of like that, yeah.

【Bri】Oh no!

【Phillip】Yeah. How about yourself?

【Bri】If it gets to 40, not all the time…

【Phillip】Mm hm.

【Bri】…but if you have a heat dome, then it’s 40 degrees, and I can’t function. It’s too hot.

【Phillip】Right. And in the autumn, how much does it get around then?

【Bri】It’s been warm in the autumns the last couple of years. When I was a child, it would get to, like 15 degrees. And we would say, “Oh this is nice.”

【Phillip】Okay.

【Bri】But it seems now it’s around 25.

【Phillip】And you mention that the leaves change color. Does that stay on time every year or does it get earlier or delayed? Or…

【Bri】I think it gets later and later every year just because it’s been so hot later in the Fall.

【Phillip】Okay. And is there any kind of special sort of…I don’t know…like, events or anything that happens in that time when the leaves are changing color?

【Bri】I know little kids—they like to run out and try to catch the leaves as they’re falling…

【Phillip】Mm hm.

【Bri】…which is very cute. And then as the leaves are everywhere, people will come and rake them up.

【Phillip】Ah, okay.

【Bri】But it’s not, like an event.

【Phillip】No special…

【Bri】Some people will…not really. Yeah. It’s just raking the leaves. Some people have, like a trash bag that looks like a Jack-o-Lantern.

【Phillip】Mm hm.

【Bri】So they’ll stuff those—the leaves—to use as decorations.

【Phillip】Okay. Right, right, right. It’s a bit different here since a lot of our trees here are evergreens or tend to be more green in winter. Which is what’s really strange for some people because they come here in winter time and everything’s green.

【Bri】Yeah.

【Phillip】And then in the summer, everything’s dead. So it’s kind of a bit of a weird reversal for people that visit in the winter time and the autumn time. Yeah.

一方フィリップはオーストラリア在住で、ブリーが暮らす地域とは季節が逆になります。彼も猛暑の夏が過ぎて、秋は涼しくなるから好きだそうです。彼の住む地域では夏の気温が45度まで上がることもあります。

In Bri’s hometown, children sometimes try to catch falling leaves for fun. People also rake the leaves into piles, and some even put them into bags to use later as decorations.
ブリーの故郷では、子供たちが落ち葉をキャッチする遊びをするそうです。住民は落ち葉を集めて、袋に詰めて飾りにする人もいるそうです。

1) Leaves changing colors（紅葉）
