【Kelly】All right, so, Kara, what is something that is better homemade? And what is something better that is store-bought for you?

【Kara】I actually had to think a lot about this question. I will have to bring up my mother. My mom is an amazing seamstress. And growing up, she would make my Halloween costumes by hand. And she was not skipping a single detail.

【Kara】Like, my mom rewatched the movie Elf probably five times just to see the fit of the suit and how it moved. Like, that’s how dedicated she was. And I can’t even fathom buying a Halloween costume now. Like those—you remember those Halloween costumes in a bag from Party City?

【Kelly】Oh yeah. They fall apart after, like two hours. You don’t even…

【Kara】Right! That would kill her! And it’s something I see. She makes the Halloween costumes for my nieces and nephews now and I really hope they appreciate how important it is to have a handmade garment and something that is personally made just for you by someone who studied it as fanatically as you did.

【Kara】So… (laughs) …better store-bought…I don’t know. I actually—I’m very into, like small businesses lately. I feel like that’s a huge thing going on in America and that trend and kind of supporting smaller artists. Like I mentioned, I love anime and manga. And I always love finding, like smaller artists who create their own things instead of going to bigger stores. I find it—I don’t know. You feel better about your purchase, and I find that you can actually kind of make a community out of it.

【Kara】And…yeah. I think…I think those are my favorite things homemade and store-bought. What about you?

【Kelly】For some reason, I went straight to food with this. (laughs) I don’t know why. For me, homemade French toast. And I—I…the stuffed French toast, the hollow French toast, the really thick French toast…it’s just not as good as, like the cheap white bread that you fry in a lot of butter and then put more butter on. And then lots of extra…

【Kara】Yeah.

【Kelly】…you know, maple syrup. Like it’s—I don’t know if it’s a childhood memory or nostalgia or what—or if it’s one of the few things that I’m really good at making. But I just—I think homemade French toast at home always tastes better than restaurant French toast, for sure.
