【Kara】I’m a little odd. So I have about a 45-minute drive to work every day. I can’t listen to someone talking to me because the driving and the information and the listening—it’s too much for me. So genuinely, if I’m in the car, I have to have music on. I can’t pay attention to voices.

【Kara】But when I’m home and doing just house chores or cooking or whatever, I need to have something in the background. And I don’t necessarily always listen to just podcasts. I’m quite a visual person too. So I actually listen to a lot of, like longer YouTube videos that can be listened to in podcast form.

【Kara】But I—there’s something about seeing someone on the other side that makes it a little more interesting for me. I have to be careful, though. I—you live in America, so you know this. True crime podcasts are about, like…

【Kelly】Oh my God.

【Kara】…you know, crime scenes or murders or whatever. Those are extremely popular and I do like them, but I was only listening to them for a while—where I was, like sitting in my house like, “Someone’s inside. Someone’s here. Something’s happening.” (laughs) And so I have to be careful about what kinds of ones I consume.

【Kara】But yeah, I do love—like, I feel like TV is kind of dead in America. Like, gone are the days of just having the TV on in the background. So I feel like I need something, and I think those longer-form videos or podcasts kind of fill that void for me.

 

【Kelly】Yeah, be careful of those true crime ones. They will make you jumpy for sure. And you sound a little crazy when you play it really loud. And people will be like, “What is she listening to? What is this police report for an hour?” Yeah, why are they so popular in America? They’re huge! I know.

【Kara】I think it’s like…I think it’s almost a mystery. Like, you want to solve it yourself, right? Like I get so hyped when I’m like, “It was the mailman! I knew it!” You know? (laughs)

【Kelly】It’s always the mailman! It’s always the mailman. You knew it from the first five minutes, right?

【Kara】Exactly. I—I don’t know. I don’t know why they’re so popular. They’re…it’s like candy. Like, once you have one piece, you have to keep listening to all of them because now I’m a detective. Now I know how to solve crimes.

【Kelly】Oh.

【Kara】Put me in. Why wasn’t I on the front lines? (laughs)

【Kelly】You’re on the SVU squad. You’re the expert. Yeah.
