【Kara】Kelly, what’s your most-used emoji? Do you have any go-to emojis that you always use or some that you stay away from?

【Kelly】So I think my answer now is different than maybe a year or two ago because the company that I work for is a UK company. And so we use a program called Monday, which is kind of like a task organizer…

【Kara】Oh yeah.

【Kelly】…thing, right? It’s almost like—there’s like, tickets and you can see what the rest of the team’s doing and all of this. And we also use Slack. So you can create your own emojis in Slack. So there are some people that put their company ID as an emoji. And some of them are, like when they were children. Some of them are during a Halloween day. Some of them were in weird costumes. Some of them were…yeah.

【Kelly】So the custom emojis—I’ve gotten into—not an emoji war but almost like an emoji competition to see who can get the best one out. My one right now is a squirrel with a detective hat on. Somehow, that has become my emoji within the company. I don’t even remember how it started but it was a little bit like, “This is secret.”

【Kara】Yeah.

【Kelly】“This is, like a test or a trial of the project.” And somehow that became mine. And people now text that to me. I have to text it to almost every conversation that’s in there so they know that I’ve paid attention.

【Kara】Really?

【Kelly】Yeah, so the “secret squirrel” emoji on Slack. And also I very often use the “melting face” emoji. Where you’re kind of just, like, “Ehhh…” That sort of, “Oh God, this? Ugh…” sort of emotion there. I use that pretty often. It’s—it’s a nice sort of softer way of being like, “Dear God.”

【Kara】Right, exactly. (laughs) It gets a lot of feelings out.

【Kelly】It does. I mean, it is very appropriate in some situations. You look at it and you’re like, “That is exactly how I’m feeling. My face is melting into the floor.” So I think those are my two most often used ones now, at least in this job. How about you?

【Kara】The stupid three little sparkles.

【Kelly】I love that one!

【Kara】I don’t know why but it…it just works, right? Like it just makes sense at the end of every message I have to send.

【Kelly】Yeah.

【Kara】I do the cherry blossoms sometimes if…I feel like the cherry blossom’s pretty neutral. Obviously putting a heart after…after a message is a little bit girly or a little bit—something you would do with someone you’re really close to. So I find that the more neutral ones, like the sparkle, the flower…sometimes like a little pig or something…

【Kelly】(laughs)

【Kara】…I think those are kind of neutral ways. There’s…

【Kelly】Wait, hold on. You have to explain the pig. How is a pig neutral? What is that emotion?

【Kara】I am very connected to my piggy personality…

【Kelly】Oh, okay.

【Kara】…because I think I fit that… (laughs) …bill pretty—pretty fully.

1) Go-to（定番の）

“go-to”は「頼りになる」や「定番の」、「いつも選ぶ」を意味し、ある人や物、場所、方法などが「信頼できる第一候補」であることを表すときに使います。この表現のポイントは、何かを選ぶときに「迷ったらこれ！」というようなニュアンスがあります。例えば、「よく使う絵文字はハートです」は“My go-to emoji is a heart.”、「ここが私の行きつけのレストランです」は“This is my go-to restaurant.”という具合に、自分の「定番」や「頼れる存在」について話すときに使われます。

2) Stay away from（〜を避ける）

3) Somehow（なぜか、どういうわけか）

2つ目は、「どうにかして」や「なんとかして」を意味します。困難な状況があって、何をどうしたのかはっきりと説明できないけれど、最終的にうまくいった、というニュアンスがあります。例えば“I somehow managed to finish the project on time.”と言えば、「なんとかプロジェクトを時間通りに終わらせた」という意味になります。

4) Ehhh（えーっ）

“Ehhh”は、会話の中でよく使われるカジュアルな感嘆詞で、日本語の「えーっ」「うーん」に近い表現です。正式な英語ではなく、話し言葉やチャット、SNSでよく見られる表現です。たとえば、誰かに「今夜出かけない？」と聞かれて“Ehhh… Not really.（うーん…あんまり）”と返す場合、「気が乗らない」といった気持ちを表します。このように“Ehhh”は、答えをすぐに出さないとき、反応に困ったとき、またはちょっと否定的な気持ちを伝えたいときに使います。

また、“Ehhh, it was okay.（うーん、まあまあだったかな）”のように、何かに対して感動しなかったり、期待したほどではなかったと感じたときにも使われます。

5) Fit the bill（条件にぴったり合う）

“fit the bill”は、「条件にぴったり合う」や「求めていたものにちょうど合う」を意味する口語表現で、何かを探していて「まさにこれ！」というものが見つかったときに使われます。“fit the bill”は、もともとイギリス議会で“法案（bill）に合う条件”を満たすという意味で使われていたことから、「条件にぴったり合う」という意味になりました。たとえば、“We were looking for someone with experience in both marketing and design, and she really fit the bill.”と言えば、「私たちはマーケティングとデザインの両方の経験がある人を探していて、彼女はまさにその条件にぴったりだった」という意味になります。
