【Kelly】Kara, very important question being on CafeTalk and being an English tutor. But how do you feel about grammatical mistakes when you’re texting or giving comments? And does it bother you? What do you think about “grammar police?”

【Kara】I am the grammar police.

【Kelly】(laughs)

【Kara】I am. I don’t mean to be. I think now with our phones being able to autocorrect and suggest…really the margin of error is smaller now, in my mind.

【Kelly】Mm hm.

【Kara】Obviously, yes, we all make spelling mistakes. It happens. It’s normal. But it does drive me nuts. Growing up, my grandmother was actually a grammar teacher and taught it military style to my parents, who then taught it the same way to me.

【Kara】So grammar mistakes were always, like ultimate sin. You could do anything else. Like, other bad things were okay. Grammar—we don’t mess with. So I think for me, anytime I see poor punctuation or a lot of spelling mistakes, I’m like…I do take it personally. Which I—I have no right to.

【Kara】What about you? How do you feel when you read a message that has grammar mistakes in it?

【Kelly】So I actually work as a copyeditor right now. So my job is to be the grammar police…

【Kara】(laughs)

【Kelly】…and to make all of those corrections so when things get published there aren’t errors in it. But sometimes I look at things and I’m just like—with all of the spellcheck and all of these autocorrect—like, “How—how did this get through? How did you not read through and catch that?” And then I’ll go through and if I’m leaving a comment too quickly, I definitely go through and correct mine…

【Kara】Oh yeah.

【Kelly】…because sometimes you type too fast and sometimes if you’re, like texting with just your thumbs, you will make that mistake. So I get very embarrassed about mine and I catch them right away. And I’m like, “Wait, don’t look at it yet! Hold on! Let me fix that first! It’s going to be good!”

1) Grammar police（文法ミスをすぐに指摘する人）

2) It happens（そんなこともあるよ）
