いつも我が家に郵便物を届けてくれるフレンドリーな郵便屋さんとのやり取りを少しご紹介します。しばらく会っていなかった郵便屋さんはお休みを取っていたようですが、一体なぜ休みを取っていたのでしょうか？会話を聴いてみてください！

郵便屋さんとの雑談

【Jun】Hey man. What’s going on, boss? I feel like I haven’t seen you in a minute, man.
（こんにちは。お元気ですか？お久しぶりですね）

【郵便屋さん】Took a vacation.
（休みを取っていたんです）

【Jun】Oh, really? On vacation?
（そうなんですか？バケーションだったんですか？）

【郵便屋さん】Yeah, I took like a week and took a couple of days off again, and then I’m taking like five days off again.
（1週間休んで、そのあと数日また休んで、これからまた5日間ほど休みを取ります）

【Jun】No wonder, man. I was like, wait, did we get a new mailman? Because, I felt like I haven’t seen you in like over a week.
（どおりで。一週間以上お会いしてなかったので、新しい郵便屋さんに変わったのかなと思っていました）

【郵便屋さん】I haven’t seen my buddy for a while.
（あなたのお子さんとも久しく会っていませんね）

【Jun】Yeah, he’s growing up, man. He’s at preschool now. He’s started about a month ago.
（成長しました。今は幼稚園に通っています。1か月ぐらい前からです）

【郵便屋さん】How does he like it?
（幼稚園は気に入っていますか？）

【Jun】It took him a couple of days to warm up. First day, he like, held it together, and then the second, third and fourth day, as soon as we dropped him off, he just broke down. But you know, the preschool teacher was like just leave and everything is going to be okay. And after that first week, now all he talks about is wanting to go to the preschool every day. And when we pick him up, he’s like, I want to go to preschool again, so you know how it is.
（慣れるまで数日かかりました。初日は私から離れなくて、そのあと少しの間は送り届けると泣き崩れていました。でも、幼稚園の先生たちが、「大丈夫ですよ」と言って私たちを安心させてくれました。最初の週が終わると、むしろ毎日幼稚園に行きたがっているんです。迎えに行っても、途端に幼稚園に戻りたいと言うんです）

【郵便屋さん】Well, that’s the beginning, man. You’ve got to break them in right away when they are little, after that they don’t want to even be with you.
（ついに始まりましたね。小さいうちに慣れさせないと。その後は親と一緒にいたがらなくなりますよ）

【Jun】Did all your kids also go to like, preschool or…
（あなたのお子さんも幼稚園に通っていましたか？）

【郵便屋さん】Yeah, actually that’s why I was off. Because my youngest graduated, got promoted from kindergarten.
（ええ、実はそれが休みを取っていた理由なんです。末っ子が幼稚園を卒園して進級したんです）

【Jun】Oh, promoted from kindergarten? What does that mean?
（幼稚園から進級したんですか？どういうことですか？）

【郵便屋さん】He went to first.
（1年生になったんです）

【Jun】Oh, gotcha.
（あぁ、なるほど）

【郵便屋さん】Had a graduation.
（卒業式があって）

【Jun】Right, right.
（ええ）

【郵便屋さん】And then now my sixth grader graduated from sixth grade. And she is going to middle school. And my niece graduated from high school. So it’s like one after another.
（そして6年生の娘も卒業しました。中学生になります。そして姪っ子も高校を卒業しました。立て続けですね）

【Jun】Wow, a lot of graduations. Oh, that’s why you had the time off.
（次から次に卒業式ですね。だからお休みを取っていたんですね。）

【郵便屋さん】In two years, my oldest will graduate from high school. And then my others are graduating from middle school.
（2年後には一番上の子が高校を卒業します。他の子たちは中学を卒業します）
