【Jun】So…

【Yoko】What do you think?
（どう思う？）

【Jun】You got your little one on the way?
（もうすぐ赤ちゃんが生まれるんだよね）

【Yoko】Yes.
（そうよ）

【Jun】Three months.
（あと3カ月）

【Yoko】She’s coming.
（あと3カ月で生まれるわ）

【Jun】Have you thought about the names yet?
（名前はいろいろ考えてるの？）

【Yoko】So the names are in the making. Now, this is what the husband said that he said since you took my last name, you can decide on the first name.
（考えている途中よ。夫からは、結婚の時に僕の苗字に変えてくれたから、子供の名前は決めていいよって言われたの）

 

【Jun】Wow. That’s amazing.
（すごいね）

【Yoko】Yeah.
（そうだよね）

【Jun】Justine.
（ジャスティン[陽子の夫]）

【Yoko】He actually did.
（そう言ってくれたの）

【Jun】So he really doesn’t care?
（彼はホントに気にしないんだ？）

【Yoko】He doesn’t care cause…
（自由にしていいって）

【Jun】Because it’s Polendy, you got the last name.
（苗字は旦那さんので[Polendyはジャスティンの苗字]、陽子はその苗字に変えたんだよね）

【Yoko】I got the last name. So he is leaving it up to me to decide on her name, but most important, we do want a Japanese name, right?
（そうよ。だから子供の名前の決定権は私に託されたってこと。それから、名前決めで一番大事なのは日本人の名前にしたいってこと）

【Jun】Right.
（そうだね）

【Yoko】It is the year of the Dragon.
（今年は辰年でしょ）

【Jun】Right.
（そうだね）

【Yoko】And then we want a name that Americans can pronounce.
（それにアメリカ人も発音できる名前にしたいと思ってるわ）

【Jun】Right. Exactly.
（確かにその通りだね。）

【Yoko】Right? Because even like, let’s say dragon, people say Raiu.
（でしょ？だって例えばドラゴンを日本語で「竜（りゅう）」と言おうとすると、アメリカ人は「ライウ」って発音しちゃうわ）

【Jun】Yeah. Tha name Ryu, that would be Raiu. Yeah, exactly. That’s hard.
（そうだね。「リュウ」は「ライウ」って発音になっちゃうんだ。そうなんだ。難しいんだよ）

【Yoko】It’s complicated, because I want to make sure the name matches exactly how it sounds.
（難しいんだけど、英語と日本語で響きが完全に一致する名前にしたいの）

【Jun】And the hard part is like, when the Japanese names get long, it’s really hard for, like American people to pronounce and remember.
（アメリカ人にとって難しいのは、長い日本人の名前を言われたときだよね。発音するのも覚えるのもとても大変）

【Yoko】It can’t have that many syllables.
（音節が多すぎるのは避けたほうがいいわ。）

【Jun】Yeah, yeah, yeah.
（そうだね）

【Yoko】And then, of course, how it’s written in kanji is very important. So it’s a little complicated.
（それに、もちろん名前の漢字も大切にしたいと思ってるの。だからちょっと難しいのよ）

【Jun】Because I remember like a buddy of mine, Keisuke. You know Keisuke, right?
（僕の友達のケイスケ。ケイスケって覚えてるでしょ？）

【Yoko】Oh, yeah, yeah.
（覚えてるわ）

【Jun】So growing up, I remember being in class and when they would read out his name for the fist time, they would be like…And you don’t want that happening to your kid, right?
（昔、学校で名前が初めて呼ばれるときに、彼の名前は発音ができなくて…自分の子供にこういう経験をさせたくないってことだよね？）

【Yoko】It’s the pronunciation.
（それは発音の違いで起こる問題ね）

【Jun】So maybe like one or two syllables.
（だから音節は1つか2つがいいね）

【Yoko】That really matters. It’s short enough, where people can pronounce it. But something that has a meaning in how it’s written in kanji.
（大事なのは、アメリカ人が発音できる長さの名前ってこと。でも名前の漢字にも意味があるようにしたい）

【Jun】Gotcha. So you haven’t like really have any specifics yet, but Japanese name that American people can pronounce. And remember…
（そうだね。じゃあまだ具体的な名前候補はないけど、アメリカ人も発音できる日本人の名前だね。忘れちゃいけないのは）

【Yoko】And remember. And the short syllable.
（そして覚えられるもの。音節が少ないのも忘れちゃダメね）

【Jun】And short syllable.
（音節の少ない名前ね）
