「At the end of the day」には2つの意味がある？

皆さんは“at the end of the day”という表現を耳にしたことはありますか？文字通り「一日の終わりに」を意味しますが、実はもう一つ意味があるんです。一体どんな意味なのでしょうか？

At the end of the day
→「結局のところ、最終的に」

“at the end of the day”は直訳すると「一日の終わりに」なりますが、「結局のところ」や「最終的に」という意味もあり、“in the end”の代わりに使える口語的な表現です。この表現は一般的に友人同士の会話で使われるカジュアルな言い回しですが、ビジネスシーンでもよく耳にします。

I enjoyed living abroad, but at the end of the day, there’s no place like home.
（海外生活は楽しかったけど、結局のところ我が家が一番です）
At the end of the day, you have to do what’s best for you and your family.
（最終的には、自分と家族にのことを第一に考えた行動をしないといけないよ）
Studying English is important, but at the end of the day, you have to apply what you learn.
（英語の勉強は大切だけど、結局のところ学んだことをアウトプットすることが大事です）

〜会話例〜
A: Do you think I should take this job offer? The money is good, but I’d have to move out to the boonies.
（この仕事のオファーを受けたほうがいいと思う？お給料は良いんだけど、地方に引っ越す必要があるんだ）
B: I mean…If I were you, I’d take the offer. The money is too good to pass up. But at the end of the day, it’s up to you.
（うーん…もし僕だったら、そのオファーを受けるよ。その給料を断るのはもったいないよ。でも最終的には、君次第だよ）
A: Yeah, I know. It’s a pretty lucrative offer. I don’t know what to do.
（そうだよね…かなり好条件のオファーなんだ。どうしよう）
