【Vicki】What were your best memories?

【Sam】Well, it’s—it’s hard ‘cause (because) I kind of have two sets of them, right? I did my third year studying abroad in Kyoto.

【Vicki】Right, yeah.

【Sam】And so, like I have a totally different set of best and worst memories there.

【Vicki】(laughs)

【Sam】Mostly best. Like, honestly I could just say that…this—this sounds kind of bad to UCSB, like I’m dissing UCSB.

【Vicki】(laughs)

【Sam】But my favorite year of UCSB was the year I spent in Japan.

【Vicki】(laughs)

【Sam】You know? ‘Cause just going abroad…

【Vicki】Uh huh. Yeah.

【Sam】…and all of the experiences I had, the friends I made there, that was…

【Vicki】Mm hm.

【Sam】…absolutely the best year of college for me. But—and that was offered because of my school in California.

【Vicki】Mm hm, yeah.

【Sam】But it was not at that school.

【Vicki】Yeah. (laughs)

【Sam】So I—I feel like that’s—that’s a little bit cheating.

【Vicki】(laughs)

【Sam】Although, that’s also—in a way that’s a very good endorsement of going abroad.

【Vicki】Mm hm.

【Sam】Like, if you have the—like, for anyone who’s, like thinking about going abroad in their college time, do it. Absolutely…

【Vicki】Yeah.

【Sam】…’cause it was so good. But in terms of things within my school for the—my first and second and fourth year—I guess my best memory…there—there were a couple. There was this one particular night. And again, this—this has nothing—it’s kind of like yours. It has nothing to do with studying. But, I had this group of friends that I had made in my Japanese class in my second year.

【Vicki】Mm hm.

【Sam】And we just all kind of started hanging out in the first quarter of the year, in fall. And then by—by the second quarter, the winter quarter, we had really become good friends.

【Vicki】Aw.

【Sam】And so there was this one night—it was just a normal night.

【Vicki】Mm hm.

【Sam】We went back to this person’s house. We were drinking and smoking and hanging out and eating snacks and listening to our favorite music and just laughing together.

【Vicki】Mm hm.

【Sam】And it was nothing special in particular. But it was just…it was, like…the perfect evening. You know?

【Vicki】Aw.

【Sam】Just the perfect evening with friends.

【Vicki】(laughs) Yeah.

【Sam】And I will never forget just how happy I felt looking around and seeing all these people that I really liked.

【Vicki】Yeah, yeah.

【Sam】And—and felt really comfortable with. And just—and we laughed so much together.

【Vicki】(laughs)

【Sam】It was a really great time.

【Vicki】Aw.

【Sam】So that’s…it’s—it’s nothing, you know, extraordinary, but it’s probably my favorite memory.

Sam’s best memory of his college years at UCSB was a particular night in which his friends from Japanese class all got together. They drank, listened to their favorite music, ate snacks, laughed, and generally had a wonderful time together. Though it may have been simple, it was still Sam’s favorite memory from UCSB.
UCSB時代のサムの一番の思い出は、ある夜に日本語クラスの友人たちと一緒に集まった時のことです。サムと友人たちはお酒を飲んで、好きな音楽を聴いて、お菓子を食べて、笑って、とにかく楽しい時間を過ごしました。ありふれたひと時かもしれませんが、それでもサムにとってはUCSBで過ごした中で一番好きな思い出となりました。

 

Phrases of the day（今日のフレーズ）

1) Set（一組）

setは状況によって様々な意味になりますが、今回は一緒になっているものの集まり、つまり「一組」を意味します。お土産の商品がセットで販売されていたり、トレーニングメニューを「10回で１セット」のように表したり、今日の会話で使われたように記憶や思い出のかたまりを1セットと考え、分けて考えるような状況でも使えます。

• ちなみに、日本のファストフード店ではハンバーガーとポテトとドリンクの組み合わせをセットと呼びますが、英語では一般的に“combo（コンボ）”と言います。

2) Dis（批判する）

disはdisrespectを略した口語表現で、人を小馬鹿にしたり、侮辱したり、悪口を言うことを意味します。日本でも「ディスる」という表現が若者の間で使われていると思いますが、disは一般的に若者が使うインフォーマルな表現です。スペルはdisとdiss、両方が使われます。

3) Cheat（ずるい）

cheatには「カンニングをする」や「浮気をする」といった意味がありますが、日常会話では「ずるい」の意味としてもよく使われます。cheatは本来、自分が欲しいものを手に入れるために不正をすることを表します。

4) In a way（ある意味）

in a wayは物の見方や誰かの発言に対する解釈の仕方を表し、日本語の「ある意味」に相当します。日常会話ではin a senseと表現することもよくあり、意味と使い方は同じで、日常会話ではどちらも使われます。

5) Extraordinary（並外れた）

extraordinaryは「並外れた」や「異常な」、「驚くべき」を意味する単語です。extraとordinaryの２語に分けて考えると分かりやすいと思いますが、程度が通常とかけ離れていることを表します。並外れた才能や努力のようなポジティブな意味で使うこともできれば、テストが非常に難しかったり、プロジェクトを終わらせるのに多大な時間を費やすような状況で使うこともできます。
