【Brian】So what are some common small talk topics?

【Laura】Okay, so I think in the UK with small talk we generally stay clear of anything too personal. So like, we wouldn’t ask anyone’s age, or anything like that. But, you know, we’ll talk about the weather actually. (laughs) I don’t know if you’ve had that before, but yeah.

【Brian】Right.

【Laura】We talk about the weather a lot. Yeah.

【Brian】Yeah.

【Laura】Do you have that as well?

【Brian】Uh yeah. In the US we talk about the weather, but it’s…it’s actually kind of a joke when we talk about the weather now.

【Laura】Really?

【Brian】Like we always…we always make a joke that…like we always say like, you know, “Try not to talk about the weather when you make small talk,” because it’s…it’s maybe too common I guess. (laughs)
So I think…yeah I think nowadays people try and maybe talk about like family. You know, just like, uh maybe their kids or talk about, uh sports. Um…but yeah, like not too personal, not, like politics or religion. Things like that. Yeah.

【Laura】So you’ll go straight into, like, “Oh, what’s your job?” or…

【Brian】Um, actually yeah. I think that’s, like a common American, uh thing maybe. We—we ask like, “What do you do?”

【Laura】Oh yeah.

【Brian】“So what is it that you do?” You know? Uh and—but we don’t ask, like “How much you make?” or, uh…you know, really go into details. It’s just, like, “What is your daily job?” I guess.

【Laura】I don’t know. I think even in the UK, if you ask what someone’s job is, sometimes it comes across as like you’re kinda (kind of) trying to find out how much they earn.

【Brian】Oh…okay. Yeah we don’t talk about religion. We don’t talk about age or, uh money. Definitely not politics or religion, especially now in the US, with the, uh…the divide between, like anti-Trump and pro-Trump, uh people. There’s uh…I think politics is like kind of a…you know, like a no-no to touch on.

Phrases of the day（今日のフレーズ）

1) Stay clear of（〜を避ける）

危険や問題の引き金となるようなことを避けることを Stay clear ofと表します。危険な地域を避けたり、体に悪いと思われるものを食べなかったり、デリケートな話題について触れなかったりするなど、様々な状況で使われます。
一般的には Stayではなく steerが使われます。

2) Nowadays（最近は）

「最近は」や「この頃は」を表す日常表現が nowadaysです。
現在の現象、傾向、流行など、過去との違いを強調する場合によく使われます。

3) Come across（印象を与える ）

他人にある印象を与える場合に使われる口語的な表現が Come acrossです。
特に初対面での印象について話す時に用いられ、印象の良し悪しにかかわらず使える表現です。
その他、 Come offも同じ意味を持つ表現です。

4) Find out（見出す）

Find outは、ある事実に気がついたり、何かを発見したりすることを意味します。状況に応じて日本語での表現が異なり、「確認する」、「気づく」、「知る」、「調べる」など様々な意味を持つ表現です。

5) No-no（駄目）

No-noはやってはいけないこと、または禁じられていることを表します。社会的、文化的、または規定上の理由で、許されない言動を指します。「絶対にやってはいけない」のように強調したい場合は、 A big no-noと言います。
