【Eri】Is there something that you are obsessed with?

【Jenny】Now?

【Eri】Now.

【Jenny】Now um this might be a little bit of a problem. I’m obsessed with online shopping. Like I’m…I’m going a little bit overboard here. I’m…I’m starting to worry a little bit. (laughs) Uh I have a lot of packages coming, um…

【Eri】What are you buying?

【Jenny】I think, um…like uh, a lot of things for the house…

【Eri】Oh.

【Jenny】…’cause (because) we decided not to move.

【Eri】Ah.

【Jenny】So um, originally I didn’t wanna (want to) buy anything for apartment because I thought we might have to move so I don’t need to be buying anything more, but now we decided that we’re gonna (going to) stay a little longer so, I’m just buying all kinds of stuff.

【Eri】Like pillows and accessories?

【Jenny】Like bed clothes, curtains, and so…

【Eri】Mm. So where are you—I mean what kind of online shopping—what are the sites?

【Jenny】Um, well my…my favorite, uh for just, like toiletries and cosmetics and things like that is iherb.com or iherb.com (silent h).

【Eri】Oh, yeah.

【Jenny】‘Cause it’s so easy to get it in Japan.

【Eri】I had someone tell me about that site for vitamins.

【Jenny】Yeah. Yes, exactly.

【Eri】Uh huh.

【Jenny】And, uh just like special shampoos or lotions. Like I have very sensitive skin…

【Eri】Uh huh.

【Jenny】…so they have all of the sensitive sunscreen and everything and, yeah. So I just love online shopping now and of course Amazon.

【Eri】Yeah.

【Jenny】And Prime Day’s coming up.

【Eri】Yeah.

【Jenny】Ah. (laughs)

【Eri】So you’re definitely a Prime member.

【Jenny】Oh yeah. (laughs)

【Eri】(laughs) Free shipping, right?

【Jenny】Oh, absolutely.

【Eri】Yeah.

【Jenny】And all the other stuff too. So you can watch videos and listen to music.

【Eri】Mm hm. Music is good, yeah.

【Jenny】Yeah. But is there anything that you’re obsessed with now? I mean you said that you were obsessed with Twitter, but…

【Eri】Well, I got into the rabbit hole that you talked about with some digital currency. Some cryptocurrencies.

【Jenny】Oh.

【Eri】I started—‘cause, you know, I…I bought some Bitcoin two years ago.

【Jenny】Mm hm.

【Eri】And, I thought, “Wow, that was smart.”

【Jenny】Mm hm.

【Eri】So I said, “Oh, I should continue this smartness and go and find some other up-and-coming currencies.

【Jenny】Oh, really?

【Eri】So I spent a lot of time researching and then once I researched, I just got into the buying mode, like you said you said you couldn’t stop your online buying.

【Jenny】Yeah.(laughs)

【Eri】I was doing the online digital wallets putting lots of very long-shot coins into my wallet…

【Jenny】Okay.

【Eri】…hoping. And then you get obsessed with checking the value, like, you know, every twenty minutes you wanna see. “Oh, has it gone up? Has it gone up?”

【Jenny】Yeah. (laughs)

【Eri】“Oh my God, it went down.” (laughs)

1) Toiletry （洗面道具、洗面用品）

歯ブラシや歯磨き粉、シャンプーやボディーソープ、ヘアブラシやカミソリなど、洗面用品全般を指す表現がtoiletryです。 総じてToiletriesと複数形で使うのが一般的です。

2) Stuff（もの）

「スタッフ」と聞くと、真っ先に「店員」を思い浮かべませんか？実は「店員」を指す「スタッフ」は “staff”で、「もの」を表す「スタッフ」は”stuff”なのです。
stuffは基本的にthingと同じ意味で、「もの、物事、事柄」を表しますが、 「荷物」の意味もあり、例えば「Don’t forget your stuff（荷物を忘れないように）」と言うこともできます。

3) Up-and-coming（将来有望な）

Up-and-comingは、将来有望と見なされている期待の新人や新興企業、また、大きな可能性を秘めている地域などに対して使われます。

4) In _____ mode（〜の状態）

Modeは、機械がある一定の状態にあることを表す場合に使用される単語ですが、日常会話では、人がある状態にあることをカジュアルに表す際にも使用されます。例えば、「仕事モードに入る」は Get into work mode、「衝動買いのスイッチが入る」はGet into buying modeのように使われます。

5) Long shot（大きな賭け）

本来Long shotは、競馬で勝つ見込みが非常に低い馬にお金を賭けることを意味しますが、この表現はビジネスの場で使われることが多く、新しいプロジェクトや事業をスタートする際、成功の可能性は低いが成功したら大きな成果が得られる「大きな賭け」「大胆な試み」という意味合いで使われます。日常会話では、「期待できないが〜をやってみる」という軽い感じでも使われます。
