【Joshua】So Sharon, we also have the proverb, “Better late than never,” which means that it…it basically says that it’s better to do something late than to not do it at all. And I could think of some occasions where this might not be true, but what do you think about this? “Better late than never.”

【Sharon】Yeah, and I’d be curious to hear your—where you think this might not be applicable or might not be true.

【Joshua】Right.

【Sharon】Um…in most cases I would say I agree with this…

【Joshua】Yeah.

【Sharon】…that, um it’s better to show up…

【Joshua】Mm hm.

【Sharon】…than to not go at all.

【Joshua】Oh, okay.

【Sharon】Um, you’ll get something out of showing up…

【Joshua】Mm hm.

【Sharon】…or even—I was trying to think of a situation like, say you’re going to apply for a job…

【Joshua】Right.

【Sharon】…and you have an interview…

【Joshua】Right.

【Sharon】…and you’re running late…

【Joshua】Okay.

【Sharon】…and you should call, obviously.

【Joshua】Right.

【Sharon】That would be the polite thing to do, or the right thing to do. But it’d be better to call and tell them you’re going to be late, or to show up late, than to never go at all.

【Joshua】Hm.

【Sharon】That—this is a really good question.

【Joshua】Right.

【Sharon】What are your thoughts?

【Joshua】I feel like—so I’ve—I’m so—because I teach at a university, I have students who are just habitually late. They make it their business to be late. If you could—if you could make money from being late, they’d probably be the best entrepreneurs in the country.
 
So it’s…when I’m teaching, I have students that will come in late the last ten minutes of class. And at that point, it just looks bad. There’s nothing really to gain in the last ten minutes. You’re—it’s out of context. You don’t know what the teacher’s talking about. Uh you interrupt class, and you just look bad. It—it looks poorly upon oneself to show up that late.
 
So I feel like, “Better late than never” has a limit in regards to how late: to what extent are you late. So if you show up in the last minute, uh it might’ve been better to just not come at all. And if you wanna (want to) save face, come up with a good excuse as to why you were late, and maybe people would be more understanding.

Joshua used the example of his teaching job at a university. In the class he teaches, some students are habitually late. He believes that if they show up in the final ten minutes of class, or in a similarly late fashion, it might be better if they simply do not go to class at all. By arriving late, they disrupt class and gain little from it.

1) Show up（来る、姿を見せる）

Show upは、パーティーやイベント、ミーティングやアポなどに「現れる」や「登場する」ことを意味します。来るはずの人が予定どおり来たり、逆に来るはずの人が来なかったことを示す状況で使われます。

2) Let’s say（例えば〜としましょう）

Let’s sayは、「例えば〜としましょう」や「仮に〜したとして」のように、ある事態を仮定する時に使われる表現です。今日の会話でシャロンが「say」と言ったように、日常会話ではlet’sを省くことも一般的です。

3) Run late（予定より遅れる）

Run lateは到着が遅れることを伝える時に使う口語的なフレーズです。「I’m running late. （遅れています）」や 「I’m running 15 minutes late. （15分遅れています）」のように、一般的には現在進行形で使います。
