【Cody】Adam, when you watch the Olympics what events do you like to watch? What sports do you like to see?

【Adam】So for the Summer Olympics, all the summertime sports…this is great, and, yeah it’s going to be in Japan in, uh in four years from now and this time around it’s in Brazil. There is one sport that I like to watch for the Olympic—I…there are many sports. However, uh Men’s Olympic Basketball is my favorite…

【Cody】Yeah.

【Adam】…because it takes all the NBA stars, the top tier talent…

【Cody】Right.

【Adam】…and it puts them against the other international, uh squads. So all the players in the NBA—if anyone here follows the NBA—all those guys, they represent their countries…

【Cody】Mm hm.

【Adam】…and then they play the American guys, and I like it when it gets kind of close, and…usually, uh it’s traditionally the American men are dominant in that sport.

【Cody】Right.

【Adam】I like it when an international team—Spain or Argentina—kind of pushes the American team so that it gets pretty competitive, and then everyone’s a little worried who’s gonna (going to) medal in that sport. I get pretty excited about that.

【Cody】Sure that takes things to a whole new level and isn’t it kind of interesting to see these guys who are normally so competitive…

【Adam】Mm hm.

【Cody】…and boisterous against one another kinda (kind of) come together and…

【Adam】That—that’s a great…

【Cody】…do it for their country.

【Adam】Yeah, for their country. That’s right. So enemies during the regular, professional season, uh colleagues and, uh playing on the same team with each other, it brings everyone together for their country, and I think that’s the essence of the Olympics; representing your country.

【Cody】It’s a beautiful thing, beautiful thing. Now is there anything else that you watch, but you could never personally do yourself?

【Adam】Oh, see whenever I watch something I always think to myself, “I can do that.”

【Cody】Right on. (laughs)

【Adam】And the number one thing is, when I think of the Olympics, I think of things that you don’t normally see, like Track and Field…

【Cody】Oh yeah.

【Adam】…the Decathlon. So how can I…could I do the high jump? Could I do the pole vault?

【Cody】Right.

【Adam】I don’t know where I could even go to put my hands on the pole vaulting equipment to get—to practice that, and there are guys who are training for this…

【Cody】Oh yeah.

【Adam】…for their whole lives, to go ahead and execute in front of a live crowd. The whole world is watching for gold, uh I’m pretty riled up right now. I’m pretty excited about the Olympics.

【Cody】Yeah, and they make it look so easy. I’ll tell you, I’ve tried track and field before, and some of the events like the shot put—I dislocated my shoulder the first time I practiced that.

【Adam】Wow, oh man.

【Cody】And when you watch it on TV it just looks effortless, uh you know? So I really admire the way they do it with a sense of ease and cool.

Adam and Cody both admire the skill and ease with which Olympians play their sports. Cody talked about how difficult some of the events for track and field could be. He recalled an experience in which he dislocated his shoulder playing in the shotput event.

2) Medal in（メダルを取る）

“Medal（メダル）”を名詞として覚えている方が多いと思いますが、実は動詞として使うこともあります。動詞の場合は、基本的に“Medal in” の形で、 「金メダル」や「銀メダル」などメダルの種類を問わず、漠然と「メダルを取る」ことを表します。

◎具体的に「金メダルを取る」という場合は「Win a gold medal」と言います。

3) Essence（本質 / 核心）

5) Rile someone up（イライラさせる / 興奮させる）

“Rile someone up”は、2つの意味を持つ日常表現です。1つ目は、誰かをひどくいらつかせて怒らせることを意味します。イメージとしては、大声で叫んで怒鳴るほどの怒りになります。2つ目は、 “very excited”と同じ意味合いで、ものすごく興奮している状態を表します。今日の会話でアダムは、オリンピックの話に夢中になって「I’m pretty riled up」と興奮していることを表現しましたが、ここではポジティブな意味合いになります。
