【Monique】So in Sapporo, were you able to find trash
cans? (laughs)

【Mercedes】No, actually. I was not, and for a while I
thought it was just me. Maybe I was blind to trash cans or I was just looking in the wrong place, but…yeah I learned that this was kind of a typical Japanese thing…yeah.

【Monique】Yeah, I wasn’t sure if it was just like, Tokyo…

【Mercedes】Right.

【Monique】…or, like other places, but no. Uh…but it was really funny‘cause (because) of course if there was a festival going on, they’d be everywhere.

【Mercedes】Right.

【Monique】But as soon as the festival‘s over…nothing.

【Mercedes】They disappear. (laughs)

【Monique】They all disappear.

【Mercedes】Yeah.

【Monique】Uh…when I went to Tokyo Disneyland for the first time…

【Mercedes】Mm hm.

【Monique】…as soon as I entered, I was like,“This is heaven.” Not because it’s Disney, but because I was like, “I can throw things away.”

【Mercedes】I know.(laughs)

【Monique】It was so nice, um…but it’s amazing. You can’t find any trash cans, and yet it’s so clean. (laughs)

【Mercedes】Yeah, I never understood how that worked. Um, I would find myself sometimes carrying around the same empty bottle of Pocari Sweat for, like eight hours.

【Monique】(laughs)

【Mercedes】And it maybe wouldn’t be until I got home that I actually got to throw anything away, and so I was always asking my friends, like,“How is this country so clean, and yet there’s nowhere to dispose of your trash?”

【Monique】Do they all just go inside McDonald’s? (laughs)

【Mercedes】(laughs)

【Monique】Or KFC and throw it away there?

【Mercedes】I definitely…I definitely did that too. Sometimes I felt kinda (kind of) bad, I would just, like run into McDonald’s really fast, and, like throw away, like a bag full of trash, and just run away. (laughs) Like, I hope they didn’t see.

【Monique】(laughs)

Mercedes recalled that she used to take bags of her trash to McDonald’s. She wanted to throw away her trash in the restaurant with the hope that no one saw her enter.

Phrases of the day（今日のフレーズ）

1) Look (for) in the wrong place（見る場所 / 探す場所を間違える）

“Look in the wrong place”は、何かを探したり調べたりしている時に、見るべき場所を間違えていることを表すフレーズです。 “Look (for)”の後に、探している対象を置きます。

2) I was like（～な感じでした / ～と言いました）

過去の出来事を話す時に「～という感じだった」「～のようだった」などの意味として用いられ、ネイティブの会話では非常によく使われる口語表現です。“I was like…”の後に、自分がその時に感じたことや考えていたことを述べます。 “I was thinking to myself…”に置き換えると分かりやすいでしょう。

◎その他、「◯◯さんが～と言った」と表現する際に、 “He/She said…” の代わりに“He/She was like…”とネイティブはよく言います。

3) Throw away（捨てる）

不要な物を捨てることを表す日常表現が” Throw away” です。捨てる物を “throw”と “away”の間、もしくは”throw away”の後に置きます。例えば、「あのシャツを捨てなさい」は、「 Throw that shirt away.」と「Throw away that shirt.」の両方の言い方ができ、意味とニュアンスは全く同じです。

4) Get to do something（～をすることができる）

“Get to” は「～をすることができる」を表す砕けた言い方で、 “able to” に置き換えることができます。また、状況によっては「何かをする機会を得る」ことを意味します。“Get to”の後には動詞の原形が続きます。

5) Run away（逃げる）

“Run away” は、危険な場所や状況、または人から「逃げる」意味として用いられ、“Escape”よりも口語的な言い方になります。「～から逃げ出す」「～から逃れる」は、“Run away from…”となります。その他、問題やトラブルなどを避ける意味合いとしても用いられます。
