【Monique】One thing that I really liked in Tokyo is that they had a lot of, like themed restaurants…

【Mercedes】Oh yeah.

【Monique】…that had like…like one was kind of a horror theme with drinks that were all in beakers…

【Mercedes】Oh nice, interesting.

【Monique】…and test tubes, so that always makes things fun. But I…I also found that the drinks at a lot of places were really weak.

【Mercedes】Oh yeah.

【Monique】I’m more of a cocktail person.

【Mercedes】Right.

【Monique】Not so much a beer person, the cocktails are so weak.

【Mercedes】Yeah.

【Monique】But when I went to T.G.I. Friday’s…

【Mercedes】(laughs)

【Monique】Uh…I was like, “This is…this—this tastes like an American drink! I can taste the alcohol in here.”

【Mercedes】You know…they know who they’re serving. (laughs)

【Monique】(laughs) Definitely nomihodai there.

【Mercedes】Nice.

【Monique】I definitely got tipsy a lot faster than normal. (laughs)

【Mercedes】Yeah, I actually…I experienced that too in Sapporo with, um the cocktails at nomihodai. Uh, I…what I ended up doing a lot of the time was just ordering umeshu, um because you know exactly what you’re getting every time. Occasionally I would try to order a cocktail and it would just taste very sugary to me, but I’m also from a city that is known for having really strong drinks, so…(laughs) Um, yeah I guess my tolerance was high maybe. (laughs) But, um…yeah, actually in Sapporo there weren’t so many themed bars. That’s really interesting to hear.

【Monique】I think it’s because it’s Tokyo, so they have…they like to have fun, be trendy with a lot of things.

【Mercedes】Oh yeah, yeah of course.

【Monique】Um, so yeah you can look up on…online. “Themed restaurants, Tokyo.”

【Mercedes】(laughs)

【Monique】And there…there are a bunch.

【Mercedes】That’s really cool.

【Monique】Um, they’re fun to go to. (laughs)

【Mercedes】Yeah.

Phrases of the day（今日のフレーズ）

1) (Drinks are) Strong / Weak（お酒が強い・弱い / 濃い･薄い）

日本語では「お酒が強い・弱い」というと、基本的に「お酒が飲める人」と「お酒が飲めない人」を指しますが、英語で “Strong”と “Weak”を使うと、人ではなくお酒そのものの強さや濃さを表します。

2) Beer person（ビール党）

「私はビール党です」は「I’m a beer person」、「私はカクテル派です」は「I’m a cocktail person」のように、「～党」「～派」に相当する英語表現が “person”です。 アルコールに限らず、「犬派」を“Dog person”、「猫派」を“Cat person”と表現するように、様々な状況で用いることができます。

3) Tipsy（ほろ酔い）

個人差はありますが、お酒を2, 3杯飲んでほどよく酔っ払った状態を “tipsy”といいます。普通に会話をしたり、ふらつかずに歩いたりすることができる程度で、「いい感じ」に酔っ払っている状態を指します。

◎アメリカでは “tipsy”の代わりに “buzzed”もよく使われます。

4) Alcohol tolerance（お酒が飲める量）

“Tolerance”はもともと「忍耐」を意味しますが、お酒について “tolerance”を使う場合、人がお酒を飲める量を示します。「お酒が強い人」は “high tolerance”、「お酒が弱い人」は “low tolerance”です。日常会話では “alcohol”を省いて、 “tolerance”だけで表すのが一般的です。「私はお酒が強いです」は「My tolerance is high.」または 「I have a high tolerance」の2パターンで表現できます。

“Look up”は、本や辞書で何かを調べたり、インターネットで情報検索したりすることを意味する口語的な表現です。その他、目的地までの行き方を調べる時にも使える便利なフレーズです。
