【Adam】Uh, but if you want to practice your pronunciation, we can’t hear ourselves uh, pronouncing properly or improperly in…for a new language. We need someone, a native person to guide us…

【Eddie】Yes.

【Adam】…in my opinion. And so when I work with people through a computer, one of the things we often do is … when we’re working on pronunciation is to do some simple pronunciation checks. So if someone is trying to say the American “er” sound…

【Eddie】Mm hm.

【Adam】Uh, which is very difficult, and…and I know in Japan it’s often a British “er” sound, more of an “ah” than and “er” sound.

【Eddie】Yes.

【Adam】The American “er” ending, like “teacher,” it’s an “er” sound, and you…no one can hear me—ah, can see me right now, but when I say the “er” sound, I have an “er” face.

【Eddie】Yeah, he purses his lips. (laughs)

【Adam】Yeah, and I don’t look very pretty when I’m…when I make my “er” face.

【Eddie】He’s lying.

【Adam】(laughs)

【Eddie】(laughs)

【Adam】But, through the computer, through a Skype video conference, I have my students make the “er” face which is I…I open my lips and I kinda (kind of) put my mouth closed and together and I say “okay, say ‘er.’”

【Eddie】Yeah.

【Adam】And every time you have an “er” ending, this is the face that you should make, and ask yourself, “Am I making the ‘er,’ the ‘er’ face?”

【Eddie】Yes.

【Adam】And that’s something you can do uh, live or through a computer, through video conferencing.

【Eddie】Exactly, and the…the final thing about pronunciation is that to learn it well at first you have to over exaggerate.

【Adam】Sure.

【Eddie】So when you’re saying the “th” sound, to make sure that you get the “there,” and “the…”

【Adam】Mm hm.

【Eddie】…you’re overemphasizing it. You’re putting that tongue way out in front of your teeth to make it happen. Once you can do that consistent—consistently, and you’re relaxed with it, then you can relax a little, and you’ll still be saying your “th-s” without looking ridiculous.

【Adam】Sure.

【Eddie】So at first you have to overemphasize, and then you can come back from that.

【Adam】Oh, that’s great.

【Eddie】Back to baby babbling.

【Adam】Yeah.

2) Make _____ face（～のような顔をする）

◎ 写真を撮るときに「変顔して」という場合は「Make a funny face」、「悲しい顔をして」は「Make a sad face」のように、“Make”と“Face”の間にどのような顔なのか具体的な言葉を入れて、「〜のような顔をする」を表現します。

◎ 何かを大げさに言ったり、誇張したりすることを“Exaggerate”と表現します。単に話を面白くするための他にも、危険性や重要性をきちんと伝えるために、あえて誇張する場合にも使われます。

4) Overemphasize（過度に強調する）

◎ この単語は、「強調する」を意味する“Emphasize”の頭に“Over”を加えて成り立っており、「過度に強調する」や「過度に重視する」を表します。
◎ 今日の会話では「Over exaggerate」という表現も出てきましたが、このように“Over”を 動詞の頭に加えることで、何かをやり過ぎることを表します。
