【Eddie】Now I’m interested. You do, uh Skype lessons. So how do you deal with a student over Skype who might be feeling shy? Is that…

【Adam】Sure. That’s a great question. So, uh I…I teach Skype lessons on a website. I don’t know if I’m allowed to plug it, but I will.

【Eddie】(Laughs).

【Adam】It’s called “thevirtualbridge.com”. And, uh, when students come to me, uh of course they are wary, uh… “Who is this guy? I’ve never met him before. Okay I’ll take the trial lesson.” So, uh I think that people want to get started without, uh…Money’s an issue.

【Eddie】Of course it is, yeah.

【Adam】So people can study by themselves. Why should they try a Skype lesson? And the deal is, you can make a connection with a native English speaker from somewhere in the world without leaving your home. That’s really convenient…

【Eddie】Yeah.

【Adam】…in my opinion. And convenience in today’s world is huge.

【Eddie】Very much.

【Adam】So how can a person feel comfortable while communicating online through Skype? And I believe it’s through a technique, uh I just made this, uh I made this word up. I don’t know if it’s a true thing, but in my world it’s true. It’s called “situational English.”

【Eddie】Yeah.

【Adam】So if you’re a surfer…I love surfing so I’ll use surfing as an example. If you’re a surfer, and you’re from Japan, and there’s tons of Japanese surfers…Hey guys, surfing, I live in California…

【Eddie】Hang ten dudes! (laughs).

【Adam】That’s right, hang ten, right on. Cowabunga! So if you love surfing, talk to your teacher, find a teacher that’ll talk about surfing with you. If you are passionate about a topic, you wanna (want to) say, “Hey, how can I explain paddling out?” Or, “How can I say that I caught a wave?” “How can I discuss the color of the water? The temperature of the water? The tide situation?” “When’s the best surf season?” If you are really passionate about a topic and you can discuss that with your instructor, I think you’ll find yourself getting more comfortable more quickly.

【Eddie】Yeah.

【Adam】And you’ll find the sentences and the vocabulary that you are actually interested in knowing in that situation. So finding the right person who’s willing to talk to you about the things that you want to talk about is paramount.
