【Kelsey】So what are your plans for St. Patrick’s Day?

【Monique】Uh well St. Patrick’s Day um I always wear green. Uh I think they…they teach you that as a child because if you didn’t wear green then all the school kids were gonna (going to) pinch you (laugh).

【Kelsey】(Laugh).

【Monique】So um and uh if there’s any color themed holiday like um even if I don’t have a boyfriend on Valentine’s Day I’m always wearing like the Valentine’s color like red or pink or white. I get super holiday, uh excited (laugh).

【Kelsey】(Laugh).

【Monique】So um I always plan a very green outfit and I also have like uh St. Patrick’s Day socks…

【Kelsey】Oh fun.

【Monique】with four-leaf clovers on them and stuff so I will be very green and um I uh always cook Irish food so I think last year I made um an Irish potato dish. Surprise there (laugh). So I had some uh Irish potatoes and then um I think my mom made some uh some Irish meat dish.

【Kelsey】Oh corned beef?

【Monique】Yeah corned beef and then um I know in my college campuses…if the campuses were allowed to have alcohol they’d have the green beer for all the college students to drink so really uh good time. What about you?

【Kelsey】I usually don’t do very much despite the fact that I’m actually very Irish (laugh).

【Monique】(Laugh).

【Kelsey】Um I know that um it’s common to go out drinking in the bars. But I don’t drink very much and I’m still in school so I’m pretty boring.

【Monique】(Laugh). How…How Irish are you?

【Kelsey】I’m over half Irish. So most of me should be participating.

【Monique】See I’m…I’m only like what? One sixteenth Irish and I do way more than you (laugh).

【Kelsey】You’re much more Irish than I am.

【Monique】My uh I have uh family in uh…that live in the suburbs of Chicago.

【Kelsey】Uh huh.

【Monique】And um well there’s the Irish, the sixteenth from my mom’s side and…but then their mom is half Irish so they’re also over…all my cousins are over half Irish and I know they really get into St. Patrick’s Day. A lots of Irish food and…

【Kelsey】Yeah.

【Monique】Wearing green and Chicago they have huge parade and…

【Kelsey】Yeah.

【Monique】they dye the river green, I’m like “Maybe I should go out and visit my family for St. Patrick’s Day.” That would be really fun.

【Kelsey】That would be a great holiday to visit there. To see the whole river green.

【Monique】And all those people in those plastic green top hats and…

【Kelsey】Yeah (laugh).

【Monique】That’d be really cool.

【Kelsey】Mm hm.

Phrases of the day（今日のフレーズ）

1) Theme（テーマ）

◎ 意味は日本語のテーマと同じで、主題や話題を指します。ここで気をつけておくポイントは発音になります。 「テーマ」と発音するとアメリカ人には通じませんので気をつけましょう。正しい発音の仕方は“Theme”になります。
◎ テーマ（Thema）はドイツ語から由来した外来語になります。

2) Despite the fact that（〜という事実にも関わらず）

◎ “Despite”と意味は同じですが、“Despite the fact”のほうがよりフォーマルな言い方になります。違いは文章構成にあります。
◎ “Although”や“Even though”がインフォーマルな表現の仕方です。

3) I don’t drink very much（お酒をあまり飲みません）

◎ お酒を普段あまり飲まないと相手に伝えたい場合は“I don’t drink (very) much”を使いましょう。お酒が弱いと表現したい場合は“I can’t drink (very) much”と表します。さらにお酒が全く飲めない場合は“I can’t drink”になります。
◎ その他、お酒にまつわる表現を幾つかご紹介します。「ほろ酔い」は「I’m buzzed.」、「酔っ払っている」は「I’m drunk.」、「ベロベロの状態」は「I’m wasted」などと表現します。

4) How _____ are you?（どれくらい〜なの？）

◎ 相手の状態や気持ち、性格や外見などについて「どれくらい〜なのか？」と尋ねる時によく使われる質問の仕方です。今日の会話ではモニークさんがケルシーさんに「How Irish are you?（どれくらいアイルランドの血が混ざっているのですか？）」と尋ねましたように、混血の人に対して、どれだけその国の血が混ざっているのかを聞くときに使えます。
◎ 基本的に“How”と“are you ”の間に形容詞か名詞が入ります。

5) Get into（夢中になる・熱中する）

◎ “Get into”は非常に多くの意味を持つフレーズですが、今日の会話では、物事に夢中になったり、熱中したりすることを表す意味として使われています。
◎ イベントやお祭りなどを盛大に祝ったり、周りの目を気にせず趣味に没頭したり、または何かを本気でやるニュアンスがあります。
