【Mary】So 2017’s almost over. What was the most challenging thing that happened to you this year?
【Becca】I think it was still traveling to New Zealand…
【Mary】(laughs)
【Becca】…because originally I had planned to stay there for longer, but ended up staying there a month, and then going to South Korea. So…before that, I decided to kinda (kind of) pack everything up into one suitcase and just go, but didn’t know exactly where I would end up at the end of the day, so.
I originally went there for a working holiday, and uh, wasn’t able to find a job in quite the time frame, and then there’s always the draw back to Korea. I knew I could live there for cheaper, so…(laughs) I ended up back in South Korea.
【Mary】Yeah I’m always curious how easy it is to actually get—like, get a job before you go, or if you should show up and get one.
【Becca】Yeah.
【Mary】Easy in Korea, because I assume you have connections there, you know? You can kinda know what you’re getting into. But…
【Becca】Absolutely, yeah. What about you?
【Mary】I haven’t really had any huge challenges that weren’t just set for myself. Um…
【Becca】Mm hm.
【Mary】Biggest challenge was moving to a new place where I know literally no one, and just trying to find out how to insert myself into a…into the community, you know? Um…
【Becca】Absolutely.
【Mary】Language study is, like my biggest passion…
【Becca】Mm hm.
【Mary】But there are no opportunities to speak Korean or Japanese in Nebraska. (laughs)
【Becca】(laughs) Yeah.
【Mary】So…just like, trying to meet people, starting a meet-up group, um…just starting all over again.
【Becca】Mm hm.
【Mary】I feel like we move every year though, so I’m always doing that. So it gets easier every time. (laughs)
【Becca】You’ve gotten good at picking up and moving to a new place.
【Mary】Yeah, although this is probably the biggest challenge, ‘cause (because) everywhere else I’ve lived…honestly, like traveling or speaking another language is a real…a really good way to meet new people.

Mary however admits that Nebraska is challenging because there are no opportunities to practice Korean or Japanese, and language study is her main passion. She says that speaking other languages and traveling to other countries was a good way to meet new people, and she can’t as easily do that in Nebraska.

Phrases of the day（今日のフレーズ）
1) Pack up and go（荷物をまとめて出て行く）
Pack upは「荷物をまとめる」、 Goは「行く」を意味することから、 Pack up and goは「荷物をまとめてさっさと出て行く」ことを表します。仕事が終わったら同僚と雑談などせずにさっさと会社を出たり、計画を立てずに思いつきで旅行に出たりするニュアンスが含まれます。
Packとupの間に、 bagや stuffなど入れることもできます。
Pack up and leaveと表現することもできます。
- Are you guys ready? Let’s pack up and go. Our train leaves in one hour.
（みんな準備はできた？荷物をまとめてさっさと出よう。私たちが乗る電車は1時間後に出発するよ。） - Steve looked like he was in a hurry. At five o’clock he packed up and left the office.
（スティーブは急いでいたみたい。5時ぴったりに荷物をまとめてオフィスをさっさと出ていったよ。）
- I decided to pack up my stuff and just go. It was the best decision of my life.

2) At the end of the day（結局は）
At the end of the dayを直訳すると「1日の終わりに」ですが、日常会話では、「結局は」「最終的には」という意味で使い、全てを考慮した上で決断したり意見を述べたりするニュアンスがあります。
In the endと同じ意味ですが、 At the end of the dayの方がより口語的です。
- At the end of the day it’s your decision. It’s up to you.
（最終的にあなたが決めることです。あなた次第です。）
- I decided to settle down in LA. At the end of the day, I wanted to be close to home.
（ロスで落ち着くことにしました。結局は実家の近くにいたかったので。） - At the end of the day, you have to do what’s best for you and your family.
（最終的には自分と家族にとって最善のことをしなくてはいけません。）
3) Time frame（期間）
Time frameは、物事を行うのに必要な時間や期間を意味します。仕事やプロジェクトを遂行するのに必要な時間、ミーティングやイベントの時間枠、目標達成までの期限といった一定期間を指します。
- We were on a tight schedule. We couldn’t visit all the cities we wanted to within that time frame.
（スケジュールが詰まっていて、その期間内に行きたい都市を全て回ることができませんでした。）
- The project has to be completed in a time frame of one month.
（1か月でそのプロジェクトを遂行しなくてはいけません。）
- It’s extremely important to set a time frame to achieve your goal.
（目標を達成するには期限を設けることが非常に重要です。）
4) Draw back（引き返す）
Draw backは、「後ずさりをする」ことを意味します。突然現れた蛇に驚き後ずさりする状況で使われることもあれば、 物事が計画どおりに進まず、断念して撤退する意味でも使われます。
- The snake popped out of nowhere and I drew back in surprise.
（突然蛇が現れたので、驚いて後ずさりしました。） - I was planning on moving to New York but I had to draw back because my dad got sick.
（ニューヨークに引っ越す予定でしたが、父が病気になり、行くのをやめました。） - I drew my hand back because the dog was about to bite me.
（犬にかまれそうになったので、手を引っ込めました。）
5) Get into（足を踏み入れる）
Get intoは、ある状況に陥ることを意味します。厄介な状況に足を踏み入れたり、面倒な事態に巻き込まれたりするなど、日常会話では一般的に困難な状況に陥る意味合いが含まれます。
- Do you know what you’re getting yourself into?
（自分がどんな状況に陥ってるか分かってる？） - How did I get myself into this mess?
（どうしてこんな厄介なことに巻き込まれたんだ。） - I know opening a restaurant is not easy. I know what I’m getting myself into.
