【Jansen】New Years…Um yeah sometimes I spend it with my friends but this year I think I might spend it with my friends I guess. Yeah you know usually we just uh hang out at someone’s house and you know just have some drinks and play games and stuff. Yeah what about yourself?
【Jennifer】Uh ours is pretty low key, uh we don’t do too much. (On) Christmas we’ll exchange cards, maybe some presents…that’s at home.
【Jansen】Uh huh.
【Jennifer】And then New Years we also stay home, maybe go out for dinner and then at night we turn on the TV, watch the countdown on the news.
【Jansen】Oh.
【Jennifer】They show the different countries at their different uh time zones like setting off the fire works.

Phrases of the day（今日のフレーズ）
1) Get together（集まる）
◎ ”Get together”は、友達や家族、同僚らと集合することを表す日常表現です。”Hang out”と意味が似ていて、友達と遊ぶニュアンスがあります。
◎ “Let’s get together”は、人を誘う時の定番のフレーズです。
- On Christmas day, my mother’s side gets together.（クリスマスの日には母方の親戚が集まります）
- Let’s get together this weekend.（今週末遊びましょう）
- I got together with Todd yesterday.（昨日トッドさんと会いました）
2) Mother’s side / Father’s side （母方／父方）
◎ ”Side”は「側」を意味する単語で、”Mother/Father”と組みわせて使うことで「母方／父方」を表します。親戚が、母親側なのか父親側なのかを具体的に示すときに使われます。
◎ “Side of the family”が正式な表現の仕方になりますが、会話では省略して、”Side”だけで表すことが多いです。
- My dad’s side lives in San Diego.（父方の親戚はサンディエゴに住んでいます）
- My mother’s side of the family came over yesterday.（母方の親戚が昨日遊びに来ました）
- I hardly know anyone on my father’s side.（父方の親戚はほとんど知りません）
3) Lively（活発な）
◎ ”Lively”は”Live”に基づいた言葉で、活気に溢れ生き生きとした状態を表します。
◎ 元気いっぱいでアクティブな人や活気のあるお店、または賑やかな雰囲気を表します。
- So it’s always lively right?（いつもとても賑やかなんでしょうね）
- I work with a lively group of people.（元気いっぱいのメンバーと働いてます）
- This restaurant is really lively.（活気のあるレストランですね）
4) Unbearable（耐えられない）
◎ ”Bearable（耐えられる）”の否定形で「耐えられない」を意味し、形容詞として使われます。
◎ 人、仕事、天気、物事など様々なシチュエーションで使える便利なフレーズです。
- Everyone is so loud that it’s unbearable.（みんながうるさくて耐えられません）
- This cold weather is unbearable.（この寒さは耐えられません）
- It was an unbearable pain.（耐えられないほどの痛さでした）
5) Low key（控えめ）
◎ 催し事などを派手にやらず控えめに行うことを意味する口頭的な表現です。特に、祝い事を盛大にやらず、限られた人数で控えめやるときによく使われます。
◎ その他、「地味」や「目立たない」という意味としても使われます。
- Our New Years is usually pretty low key.（私たちは通常控えめにお正月を祝います）
- I want to do a low key birthday party.（控えめな誕生日会をしたいです）
- She is pretty quiet and low key.（彼女は静かで控えめな人です）

今年も一年お世話になりました。
本当にありがとうございます。
今年はじゅん先生のおかげで、
ネイティヴの方が使う生の会話を学ぶことができました。
アメリカ人の友達が、その表現を使ったときには、「わぁ‼︎ Hapa英会話で聞いた‼︎」と、嬉しくなりました。
(例)We can grab a quick lunch.
これからも教科書には載っていない、生の英会話を楽しみにしています。
2015年の目標は、英会話と同時に歴史や
文化や政治に関心を持って、勉強に取り組みたいと思います。
昨年、オーストラリアに日本語教師のボランティアに行ったときに、移民の話しをお伺いし、多文化共生に興味を持ちました。
来年、取り上げて頂きたいトピックは以下の3点です。
①国籍について
(例)オーストラリアで育ったけど、親はアイルランドとカナダ人
(例)アメリカで産まれたけど、台湾人と中国人のハーフ
様々な人々が違うアイデンティティーを持ち、同じ国籍の中で共に社会を築く時に大切なこととは⁈
②国際結婚について
普段の食事から子育てなど、千差万別⁈
③選挙について
選挙の方法は⁈国民の関心は⁉︎

日本では1月20日まで新年の挨拶をしますが、アメリカではどのくらいですか？
私が思うのは、一番多いのが正月で、元旦から3日くらいまで。長くても一週間くらい。
質問があります。
今日の「low key」は地味な服にも使えると思うのですが、服に関してはあまり聞いたことがないのですが、どうなんでしょうか？’plain clothes”あたりでしょうか？
日本語の地味という言葉には、どこかネガティブなイメージがありますが、地味はなんでしょうか？ちなみに派手（目立ちたがり屋という意味も含んだ上で）はどうでしょうか？

「Happy New Year」を言う・言わない具体的な期間は決まっていませんが、年を開けてからまだ会っていない友達や同僚でしたら２〜３週間程度でしょう（私の個人的な感覚ですが）
“Low key”が「地味な服」として使われることは聞いたことがありません。コラムにも述べたよう、祝い事を控えめに行うニュアンスがあります。地味な服は”plain clothes”もしくは”dress conservatively”と表すのが一般的でしょう。英語でも使い方によりけり、ネガティブな意味合いを持つこともあります（言い方や口調で変わります）「派手な服装」は”Flashy”がよく使われます。”That’s a flashy shirt”、目立ちたがり屋は”Someone who loves attention”と表現します。

Low Key wedding dressはインターネットに出ていました。アメリカ人とウェディングの仕事をしてたことがありますが、当時はシンプルすぎるなドレスは人気がなかったせいかこんな言葉も聞きませんでした。派手はやぱり「Flashy」が一般的なんですね。

I want to share a little bit of my 2014. When it comes to English, your podcast brought a lot of inspiration in my life, like sharing my thoughts and knowing your points of view through this blog was really fun.
It’s not flattery, but without you, I couldn’t had have such a wonderful English Year. I can’t thank you enough. Your 2014 that was spoken at the beginning of this podcast tells how much you put your effort to reach your goal “take action”, and thanks to your action, I enjoyed my study time. Thank you so much.
BTW, I really like Steve Jobs commencement speech too. I was glad that you picked that up often times on your blog and podcast.
My favorite part is “connecting the dots” cuz I think I’m the person who can’t give up what I like to do, study and speak English, and meet and know new people. The dots lead me exciting journey and that make what I am now.
Lastly, I’d like to share another favorite phrase that my friend posted on her FB.
“You don’t have to be brilliant to start, but you have to start to be brilliant”
I think everybody feels fear when he starts something, but if you take an action first, I think you are already well on your way.

私はタイ人なので母語は日本語でも英語でもありません。
然し自分の興味も含めて仕事にも役に立ちますので少しずつでも両方とも鍛えていきたいと思いました。
自分にとってポッドキャストを通じて勉強することは最近知ったばかりですごく残念だと思っていますが、一つの番組で両国語が聞かせてもらえるポッドキャストを探していました。
